Protest Marks ANZAC Day in Auckland.

A silent but visible vigil marked ANZAC day in Auckland with protesters highlighting the ongoing involvement of New Zealand troops in unjust wars around the world. Protesters held a six meter long banner saying “Honor the dead; no more wars” and placards such as “NZ troops out now”, “Lest we forget Afghanistan” and “World War one was supposed to end all wars”. The protesters stood out markedly amongst the thousands who attended ANZAC day.
As large numbers of people crowded around those holding placards and banners the cops formed a barrier between the public and protesters in an attempt to prevent the public from disturbing the dawn service. Some Minor confrontation occurred between the public and protesters as one or two members of the public attempted to remove anti war placards from the service.
After the service had finished the mixed feelings of the public were expressed with both gratitude and anger shown at our protest. Protester were approached by one man who was grateful for our stance on war. He had served in Afghanistan but had returned home and left the armed forces because the war was in his words ‘bull shit’.
While wars are being fought in our name we will continue to highlight the hypocrisy that ANZAC day has become.

Scary photo of the crowd though, I wonder what they're all thinking.
Hope you didn't have to sit through the national anthem too.
In solidarity.

However at the same time there is a spontaneous anti-militarism that manifests itself amoungst some veterans, youth and workers.
It would be a mistake to think that just because people show up on ANZAC day they are automatically rabid supporters of NZ military adventures. (there is no reason for that photo to be "scary" in the abstract. Plenty of people not altogether happy in these consumerist times also look for something meaningful to hang their hat on. The undoubted sacrifices that (misguided) working class folk made in these previous conflicts has an attraction for them for this reason too.
The argument against war in general and the NZ involvement as forces of occupation is still highly contestable in the general population and (probably) amoungst a reasonable number who attend dawn services.
If the left doesn't take the argument to these people the forces of reaction will win by default - especially as those who fought in wars and reject militarism become less and less of a voice.
But again how would anyone opposed to war know that there was going to be anti-war actions at these events to participate in them? Unless people know they are on, how are they ever going to become more than a handful of people participating?
Advertising people, it's not always capitalist conspiracy!!

People should be organising themselves too.
And of course we know that there are a lot of people at ANZAC ceremonies who are against war. That is part of the reason we protest. For them. For the soldiers who died needlessly for our so-called 'freedom'.
I do not think securing trade deals with Britain brings me or any of us freedom. It ties us into environmentally disastrous dairy farming and the whimsy of global markets. That is what ANZAC was about as far as I understand.
