“Row row row your boat
Gently down the stream
Tip the hunters overboard
And listen to them scream”
To mark the start of duck hunting season 2007 Auckland Animal Action held a demo/occupation of a South Auckland wetland.

We approached the hunters and attempted to discuss the ethics of hunting and the reasons behind their involvement however the hunters were not willing to comment on their own motivations other than to say “because we do.”
After growing tired of getting nowhere with the hunters we decided to try a new tactic of blocking the only boat access at that point of the wetland. Banners were held over the boat ramp reading “Ban blood sports” and “big guns = small dicks.”
Expecting us to move, two hunters backed their boat in to our blockade forcing us in to the water. After much pushing and shoving the hunters attempted to launch their boat, at this point two people grabbed hold of the boat and refused to let go for two hours.
During this time there were several attempts to launch their boat but we held on tight knowing that the time we delayed them meant less time that they could be killing and maiming.
At times the motor was started with us still holding on as they attempted to reach their mai mai, however we were successful in getting their boat back to shore several times until they finally managed to get away.

Nah good effort though, you should always try and spoil other peoples days when they are trying to enjoy themselves...Especially when they are doing something different to you! Everyone should be the same as you. Fuck duck hunters and shooters (the bar)
Social Struggle
However, we have a social struggle before us which relates to every species and ecological structures wellbeing, if we do not overcome the problem of global production systems and immediately transform societies means of subsistence, production and development, ducks will just be amongst the rest of the extinct.

Pile of dead ducks dumped on roadside
Wednesday May 09, 2007
A pile of 60 dead ducks has been dumped on the side of a Tauranga road.
The discovery of the shot ducks near Route K has tainted the beginning of the duck shooting season.
Deep tyre marks in the grass at the scene indicated that the birds - four Canadian geese and around 60 ducks - looked as though they had been dumped off the back of a ute or truck.
They were completely intact and strewn over a small area on the roadside.
Tauranga City Council contractors removed the birds about midday yesterday, shortly after the council had been notified.
Council communications adviser Michelle Elborne said it looked as though they had been there a while as they were starting to decompose.
"That volume of animals dumped is quite unusual, although we have had a number of cases in Tauranga recently."
Fish and Game Regional Manager Steve Smith said if this was a case of a deliberate waste of a resource, he was disappointed.
"We promote ethical behaviour among hunters," he told the Bay of Plenty Times. "Killing animals without intent to use them is not what we advocate - that's not a part of legitimate game hunting."
Hunters are allowed to kill up to 10 ducks per day.

Re: Re: Duck Hunting Season Opens Without a Bang!
my old next door neighbours when I was growing up used to kill hundreds of ducks every season and most of them they just threw them away.
I know a good 30-40 duck hunters from my previous life and they eat duck and they give some away but they still end up throw most of them away

Duck shooter to be charged in maimai case
Email this storyPrint this story 5:00AM Wednesday May 09, 2007
By Juliet Rowan
Police now say they plan to charge a duck shooter who shot another sportsman in a dispute over maimai territory.
The victim, a 61-year-old Morrinsville man, was hit by pellets in the chest and face and had surgery at Waikato Hospital.
He was discharged a day after Saturday's incident at Patetonga Lagoon, a popular duck-shooting spot near Morrinsville.
Police said the shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute over maimais but the victim had not provoked the attack.
They had been unable to locate the shooter, a Waikato man, and when he was found yesterday, he refused to speak to police.
Detective Sergeant Rod Carpinter said the man would not talk without a lawyer present so he would be interviewed today.
The detective said investigations since Saturday had indicated the shooting was intentional and police would definitely lay charges. They earlier said they first wanted to hear the shooter's side before deciding.
The charges the man would face had not been decided, but Mr Carpinter said the incident could easily have ended in a death.
said it was a "miracle" that the victim escaped with only minor injuries, because the shooter had fired at him at least once and from less than 100m, the minimum distance that was permitted between maimais.
* A small South Taranaki community is mourning the loss of a father of three, who died while duck shooting at the weekend.
The body of Blair David Lawrence, of Whenuakura, 50km northwest of Wanganui, was found in the Whenuakura River on Monday by police divers.
A big search was launched after Mr Lawrence failed to return home on Saturday and his upturned quad bike was found in the river the following day.
The 38-year-old farmer leaves a wife and three children aged 7, 5, and 15 months.
It is a truly ugly dirty business.

I don't know where you get the idea that normal working kiwis don't support the protestors. I am a normal working kiwi and I support them 100%. Some of the photos are of people who I know personally and they have good jobs. They must have taken time off work to disrupt the shooting, just as the hunters take time off work to indulge in their past-time.

And we didn't have to take time off work - it was a saturday morning.
Re: Re: Re: Duck Hunting Season Opens Without a Bang!
As for the AR movement been going seriously for about 30 years and achieving wonderful things: what a joke! It hasn't or we all would be vegans, treating our animal buddies much, much better. Sadly our species do NOT since: duck hunting, battery hen farming, animals getting slaughted in freezing works, cows being used as a source for milk, etc still happens! :-(

Re: Re: Duck Hunting Season Opens Without a Bang!
From the above comment, it appears as if you support animal rights, but perhaps are less than happy at the way the movement has been going, and that you are discouraged by what you see as a failure. If like me, you consider it self evident that building entire industries around systematic torture is wrong, then it is understandable that you have become discouraged; everyone does at some stage. But lets compare what the animal rights movement has done in the last 30 years with the history of other movements.
30 yeasr ago you would be lucky to find a restaurant tht served a vegetarian option. Just 25 years ago, even at a supposedly liberal institution like Auckland university I have been often ridiculed for being vegetarian (not even vegan). Now just about everywhere there are vegan and vegetarian options in restaurants, at least in the major centres.
The European commission is phasing out battery cages by 2012. Switzerland banned them since 1990. Finland and Sweden are also banning cages ahead of the European phase out. Some US states have banned pigs in sow crates. Foie gras has been banned in California. Bullfighting has been discontinued in Barcelona.
The Cambridge animal lbaoratory was scrapped because of protests. The Oxford lab is only going ahead because the government has almost a bottomless pocket and is determined not to lose, because, as Simon Festing said in a talk if Oxford is lost, the vivisection industry in the UK is lost.
Here in New Zealand, there were over 100,000 postcards calling for a ban on battery cages. They are only allowed to continue because of the corruption of our government.
And remember, the AR movement has a disadvantage that gay rights, womens' rights, black power, union movements etc. don't have, and that is that the victims cannot join in the fight. Nevertheless we have done very well in 30 years. St Augustine spoke out against corporal punishment in the fifth century. But it took over 1300 years for the first country to ban corporal punishment in schools, and NZ has only just banned it in the home. Negro slavery took over 100 years to be eradicated, even when negroes themselves could join in the fight.
So don't despair. When you are in the middle of the fight of course it seems to be slow, but from the point of view of history, the AR movement has been extremely effective.
Considering the other point: it is up to accusers to prove their allegations. Those who continue to think in cliches (which means not thinking) and accuse AR activists of being unemployed or unemployable should present their evidence or shut up. It is quite obvious that those making the accusations do not personally know any of the people in the photos, or any other activists who often juggle full time jobs and family commitments with activism. Most activists have a high IQ, and an ability to think for themselves and stick at a task until it is done, which makes them an asset to any employer.

Take for example Missy Higgins en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missy_Higgins.
Here are some of her songs of confirmation of her talent: www.youtube.com/watch and www.youtube.com/watch.
As you can see from the following links she is into animal rights and vegetarianism www.peta2.com/outthere/o-missyhiggins.asp and www.metacafe.com/watch/377992/missy_higgins_interview too.
Does this diminish her talent? I don’t think so!

"Adolf could not bear to eat meat, because it meant the death of a living creature."
Very ironic as I'm sure the average animal rights activist isn't a big Hitler fan.
"Many Western countries later modelled their Animal Anti-cruelty laws after the German Nazi laws, which were years ahead of their time."

No other group in the benifits animals, and their habitats like hunters do.
You people should be thanking the hunters for all they do. Because wildlife don't have a chance without their contibutions that insure that there WILL be wild places for your grandkids, grandkids to see wildlife.
How many acres of wilderness and wildlife habitat have Greenpeace, or any of the other tree hugging type conserved? I defy you to show my one plot of land larger than a city block.
These are facts! Not some knee-jerk reaction to some fleeting upswell of feeling you have toward any give thing that blows your way.
Re: Duck Hunting Season Opens Without a Bang!
How is a duck getting shot any different than a set of fangs from a fox grabbing it and eating it while it is still alive? 9 times out of 10 once a duck is shot it's dead on the first shot. While when a fox or predator grabs it, the duck feels every bite and rip of it's body as it is eatin alive.
Count your blessings that you didn't do that in the USA because people would give no regard to you if you did that in the south or any place where duck hunting is popular.
I do it because I was raised to live off the land. My families grocery bill is roughly $250 less a month because of hunting/fising/farming. It puts food on the table and I donate a good portion of what I bag to the homeless shelters. Oh by the way if y'alls IQ is so high did you know that a deer's brain has the exact number of chemicals in it to cure it's own hide. Makes a nice rug or blanket to keep warm with in the winter, or a nice set of shoes for my boys feet. I use as many parts of the animals I harvest as possible. It would be disrepecting my heritage if I didn't, I'm 1/2 Cherokee.
In the end it's all about how you were raised and what you believe in. Don't ruin someone's day being "dickless, and brainless" just because you don't like duck hunting. Oh yeah girls duck hunt too in the Great USA, my wife is one of them, so I guess "big guns - big boobs and a PhD" in her case. Oh that slogan just back fired on ya. Better think them through a little better next time. Good luck with your "protests". If you don't like it don't make it your business to know about it, then you don't know about it and you won't have to protest it.

You should come out and watch what steel does to ducks - lots more are maimed now because of the poor ballistic qualities of steel....... guess you should be happy cause it was a suppose win for the green dick heads!
you really think you're doing the right thing?
so do you guys also try to stop lions from killing gazells in africa? or do you let that happen because they are animals and it is natural? well just incase you guys didn't realize this, we are animals too. also, when an animal is shot, it dies alot faster than when a lion jumps onto its prey and pulls it down and holds it there until another lion comes up and bites it in the throat. then the poor poor animal sits there with lions all over it just bleeding to death... hmmm... i think a shot through the heart is alot more humane and it involves alot less torture. do you guys agree? if you don't, then take into account that crocodiles don't even worry about killing their prey. they just start eating it and it dies from the loss of blood after several excruciating minutes of feeling their flesh getting ripped off of their body. there is no way any of you people can honestly say you'd rather be eaten alive than shot. think about it. are we actually being inhumane? i don't think so. we are just another species of animal trying to harvest a meal. we just use tools to do it. but these tools take alot of the pain and suffering of death away from the animals.
no matter how hard you people try to fight it, human beings are on teh top of the food chain. we have been for thousands of years and we will continue to be in the future. the huamn species was deleloped because of hunting and we will continue to thrive by hunting. you guys can keep on trying to stop us, but it is our primal instinct to gather food. it'll be a shame if you guys are ever lost in the widerness and you can't find any source of food to survive because you believe that killing an animal is bad. well i am a hunter and i am proud of it. and hunters are not ruthless killers either. when you shoot an animal, you gain alot of respect for it. you see how hard it tries to survive when humans know that all hope is lost and they'd just give up and die. animals are not helpless. they have evolved over time to survive. this means that they can get away from hunters and most animals do. only a small percentage of every species hunted is actually killed. it is kind of like a form of natural selection. the animals that can sense the hunters survive and the ones that don't die. survival of the fittest.
I will hunt for the rest of my life and the only thing you guys could ever do to me is get in my way and make me laugh at your pathecitc cause to try and part us all form the natural order of things. people will always kill things and there is nothing you guys can do to stop it. besides meat tastes a hell of alot better than tofu.
