Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
On Friday 18 May, people gathered in Christchurch's Cashel/City Mall, at the “Hack Circle” to “reclaim” this public space from the clutches of Christchurch City Council (CCC) and the Business Community. Food NOT Bombs was there for the regular Friday lunchtime food sharing and to support this action.

The “Hack Circle” is an area of City/Cashel Mall where youth gather and is one of the contentious parts of the CCC's plans to “revitalise”City Mall. Another area of contention is High St., where it is planned to put a road back into this pedestrian only space.
There has been a business group “appointed” to manage the area{Central City Business Association/City Mall Business Steering Commitee}, essentially privatising public space. Anthony Gough {a CHCH property developer} chairs this business group and has been quoted as saying that youth crime is out of control and that more security is needed to help make the shopper feel safe {some other members of this group include business owner Richard Ballantyne(Managing Director of Ballantyne) and property developer Dave Henderson}. There has been an increase in policing of this space with Police recently announcing a strategy to target youth, particularly in this area. There has been a scapegoating of youth by CCC and business for the 'perceived' lack of commercial activity. Increased private security and Police presence has seen the number of youth threatened and intimidated by authorities rise, with reports of regular harassment and arrests for questionable offences ranging from wearing of “colours”to using the word “fuck”.
Students from Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti High School, which has City Mall as part of it's campus, occupied the space on Friday and set up static displays informing the public of what is planned and what their thoughts about this were. Loss of public space and concerns about the introduction of regular vehicle traffic were two key points made. They plan to gather every Friday lunchtime to continue informing the public about the “revitalisation”plans and what it really means for the people of Christchurch.
Food NOT Bombs will continue to support this with lunchtime meals. Discussion circles, workshops and live entertainment are also planned.

Another person was run over by a large vehicle in Wellington this week, where their road/pedestrian setup is similar to the proposed changes to City Mall/High St.

Another issue is that $10.5 million of public money is being spent to support property owners like Anthony Gough making even more money. At the same time more of the cities heritage and community facilities are destroyed. The CCC/KKK are using public money to help the rich get richer while the poor stay poor. This is nothing new but it highlights the Councils plans for the gentrification of the inner city and the further marginalising of the those who currently live in the inner city either on the streets or in boarding houses.

Re: Re: Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
Consequently, I think Al and others are getting distressed over something that is unimportant since the ground that they’re talking about will be underwater soon, so you may as well let the greedy twits develop it. In the end it will be a waste of their time because of the problem already mentioned.
Thus, Al, don’t sweat over the small stuff and keep focused on the bigger picture. As for the others, as already mentioned, don’t worry too much about it since there are other venues to hang out in that are much more enjoyable.

I advise the people that do drive around in circles going nowhere not be a slave to convention of the car culture, so the privileged few in the car, car audio and oil industry can make a profit from, and stop doing it. Just because the older generation did it is a weak argument to continue doing it. Otherwise, you’re screwed on many levels. For example: needing to shift from coastal cities to live on higher ground or paying higher taxes and rates to pay for dykes to protect those cities. (Since Chch was build on a swamp and on the coast it will be the first to be hit by the rising ocean levels caused by global warming.)
Think for yourselves and behave out of enlightened self-interest - instead of being brain dead puppets to the past and to the captains of industry that make a profit from cars and the of burning fossil fuels!

Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
The people in it deserve this demise because all they seem to worry about is inconsequential stuff like: fighting over a piece of asphalt turf, street racing, drugs and if they have music or not.
The stuff below is much more imperative!!!!!

CBA Mall meeting
Discussion focused on three general areas, the road, aesthetics and youth with youth being the most divisive issue that highlighted a lot of different opinions between us and the CBA, youth and drug problems in the hack was underlined as Paul from Robert Harris citing 80% of his customers having "perceived" intimidation problems with youth. Overcoming this is really a burden upon the customers of Robert Harris to overcome their narrow-minded stereotypes not on the city council to revitalise and destroy an import cultural and social area to appease the few.
A future meeting was suggested as well as regularity, this was viewed as a really positive thing that can start happening to build relationships in our community between our school and business.

Hey, how about the youth that will be displaced if The Hack Circle disappears & the people living in hostels, etc hang out by the strip, smoking, chatting, etc? I'm sure that will piss off some people. Maybe so much that they will think again about pulling down the contested turf.

Re: Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
It's a typical response though. People find it hard to accept. A recent visit to my old hometown Christchurch had me red flag the city streets as a danger zone. I have always felt safe in the garden city but now it feels like I'm running the gauntlet of a battle-scarred Bosnia full of hatred. Christchurch has cultivate an angry mob mentality in search of trouble. The weekend I was there, a 22-year-old idiot drove his car into a crowd of youths killing two and injuring ten others. Christchurch lacks community goodwill but it isn't alone. Negative media reports of angry people sweep across the country daily. It all seems a bit insane.
