Muliaga’s work mates strike against poverty wages
On Monday at 4pm workers at Centra Airport Hotel in South Auckland are taking strike action in support of a 5 percent pay increase. This is their third strike in as many weeks after pay negotiations stalled.
“The wages are so low people cannot not make ends meet” says Unite union organiser Daphna Whitmore. “The dire situation was tragically highlighted when Mr Muliuga’s wife died after their electricity was cut” she said.
Lopa Muliaga works in the kitchen at the Centra and, like many hotel staff, earns just $12 an hour. “He joined a picket outside the hotel on May 29. Lopa was not rostered on but came to support his workmates.” Says Whitmore. “Later that day his wife died after the power was cut at their home.”
While the wages are minimal the hotel is spending $10 million on refurbishments. Many workers are in debt and really struggling, says Whitmore.
On Monday the Justice Department is holding a conference at the hotel. The conference focus is on Pacific issues.
Unite members say a living wage would be the best sort of justice. They are calling on supporters to join the picket. END

I am starting to think the unthinkable, could these fascist institutions link up.
Re: Muliaga’s work mates strike against poverty wages
Labour is struggling to improve to improve its bruised image, but not once they have mentioned anything about low income wages. They say WINZ has family packages, but they don't say it's only for the rich.
National has never mentioned low income wages either and yet it thinks it can win the next election.
I'm saying there couldn't be a better time for a National campaign to create awareness and promote the welfare of low income workers.
Might see ya later, but good luck
More issues over here
cheers PW
Re: Muliaga’s work mates strike against poverty wages
dont live in the big smoke so cant come but I wish u all well today. It is a sickning situation which all low income workers understand. But be aware. At least workers are noticed. Beneficarys are not. We play no part in any party's plans except to blame us for our illnesses and disabilitys. There are no packages in any governements policys to help us. In fact WINZ have become a worse a organisation under Labour over the last few years. Beneficarys are never ask what we need to survive but as talked down to by all involved including to so called helping organisations like the churches etc. One of the major problems for the very low income is getting the same person each time we have a problem. Winz have now made it so u see who ever is avaible at the time and you no longer have A case manager so therefore u have to explain again and again what your postion is. Then when it doesnt happen u have to try to sort it out without any knowledge of how the system works. If u want a system that helps beneificarys then ask the beneficary not the organisations that help them, well say they help them but are more into control then help. They use our bad health figures etc to get more funding for their organisation to get more staff and more control and power over us. We can speak for ourselves. Dont speak on our behalf. We are poor of money not brains. We lack resources and warmth and good health but we still have our minds and our wairua. This so call Labour govt has done nothing but put us down even further down the ladder of being cared for. And there is no political party that is going to fix this. Only the low income can do it for themselves. Oh yes I can hear u cry. What about the beneficary union u ask. But I would suggest u look at who runs those organisations. Not the low income I bet. Take care of all citizens fairly and with care. Yes we have the working poor for sure but beneficarys are left even further behind. Dont speak on our behalf please we have our own voices and we know our own hurts and needs..Taku aroha ki a taatua
