On Saturday (23.06.07) AAA did a protest against Obzee - a shop selling fur on Wellesley Street in the Auckland CBD. The shop closed up and the woman from the store left. We were just packing up when the woman from the store came back with two security guards, so instantly we started the protest back up again - not wanting it to look like we were leaving because of security.

The security guards told us to leave, and we explained that we had a right to be there and protest. They threatened to call the police, and of course we told them that they were welcome to but we had a right to be there and the police wouldn't be able to do anything.

About 2 minutes later the police arrived - a young male and female officer, who had a severe attitude problem. They instantly walked up to the person with the camera and started hassling her. Of course the person with the camera ignored them. The police continued to follow her around, ignoring the person on the megaphone and everyone else.

Eventually the activist with the megaphone wandered up to hear what the police were saying. They told us we were annoying the shop next door and had to shut up. We explained that we had a right to protest blah blah blah. The police then started warning people against chanting. Some ignored their warning - knowing that we are allowed to chant on a megaphone. The Police arrested one activist and told them they were going to be charged with disorderly behaviour - despite her explaining that we have been through this before, and asking if they really wanted to look silly when they lose again?

At least by standing up for our rights and being arrested, we have some chance of stopping the police from continuing to do this in future.

You are in any case quite wrong. An animal's life means as much to him as your does to you, so why should "rights" be only restricted to Homo sapiens?
If it were not for the actions of a few humans prepared to stick up for what they believe and back the weak and vulnerable then I would also hope for the extinction of the human species.

Re: Anti-Fur Activist Arrested for Exercising Right to Protest
' Mr McGurk encouraged people to think carefully about a proposed "move on" law.
He said that while this would give the police greater power to move people away from crime scenes and break up large groups, he was aware that people could interpret the legislation as a way of denying them their right to protest.
However, he said it would be a useful tool for breaking up groups of boy racers, or crowds gathered outside Bridge St bars after closing time.
Police also wanted the ability to issue infringement notices for minor offences such as breaching liquor bans, instead of going through the lengthy process of laying charges, Mr McGurk said. ' .

The older cops hate having to deal with this kind of thing. That's why they send the young dumb ones to bully the good people.
That policewoman's face in the last photo says it all really...

Perhaps those making unsubstantiated comments on hippies and fur could also provide some references.

Re: Anti-Fur Activist Arrested for Exercising Right to Protest
1. Distinguishing between individuals
2. Making judgements as to which individuals can be trusted, based on past behaviour or on whether they are close to them (ie partners). This trust may or may not be rational but hey, doesn't love also make us blind
3. Understanding what another individual can see
4. Bluffing in order to trick another individual
5. Basing how well they trust others on their own personalities. Thief birds are most suspicious and generally better able to detect thieving in others (it takes a thief to catch a thief).
6. Remembering which individuals know what
MS Dawkins pioneered "willingness to work" experiments on animals, whereby the animals could "tell" her how much they wanted something based on how much work they were prepared to do to get it. Ian Duncan continued this kind of work on hens, and found that hens are hedonists, seeking pleasure for its own sake. They will work hard for a dustbath even if they have just had one, showing that the preference is not just an instictive one for a way of getting rid of parasites. Hens will also make their own nest even if they are provided with one already made, showing the possess something like a work ethic or maybe pride in crafting something themselves.
Jeffrery Masson wrote "the emotional life of animals" and "the pig who sang to the moon", based on observations of animal behaviour, strongly indicating the presence of emotions such as grief and joy as well as less complex feelings such as fear.
Compassion in world farming (www.ciwf.org.uk) ran a seminar on animal sentience, and more should be available on their website.
This should present enough evidence that animals have complex lives, are hedonistic, self aware and value their own lives.
Dolphins and chimps also show true altruism towards strangers (for chimps see www.newscientist.com -latest issue). A pod of dolphins near Whangarei even risked their own lives to save humans. The fact dolphins don't always behave that way is more evidence for their similarity to humans, not less. They are not compelled to save humans by some pre-programmed evolutionary mechanism, but freely choose to do so - or not. Just as we may choose to save someone else, campaign for animals, humans or the environment - or not.
