International Day of Action in solidarity with Aboriginal Communities: Otepoti/Dunedin - Tent Embassy this Saturday
As part of the international response to the Howard government's invasion of Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory, DESTEST activists in Dunedin are establishing a Tent Embassy in the Octagon on Saturday 12 June from 12pm.
Following in the twin traditions of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra, and Otepoti's own Tent Embassies, the DunEdin Tent EmbaSsy Troupe (DESTEST) is pleased to invite Dunedinites & all those of the cosmopolitan (deep) South to join with us in voicing solidarity with Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory.
A Tent Embassy will be established in the Octagon from 12pm on Saturday 14 July with the aims of creatively opposing racist policy and inviting discussion around alternatives.
The organising group, which includes members of Corso Dunedin, the Black Star Books collective, the Green Party & Food not Bombs, opposes the Howard government's military invasion of the Northern Territory, believing it to be a poorly-disguised land confiscation.
We support the rights of Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory & throughout Australia to control their land, determine their own lives & resolve issues within their communities on their terms.
We are seeking to provide an openspace where people can inform themselves on & discuss these issues, as well as the issues of Aboriginal & indigenous sovereignty generally.
Information resources will be available for reading and taking away. There will also be opportunities to write, make and paint your opposition to the Howard government's actions.
Black Star Books will have a stall there on the day, and we hope to have some hot food to give away.
Come and join us from 12pm in the Octagon.
Stand (& sit) in solidarity with Aboriginal Communities in the Northern Territory in opposition to the Australian Federal government's military invasion, land confiscation and continued genocide.
