Indigenous intervention is a 'land grab'

THE Federal Government has sent police into indigenous communities in the Northern Territory to access valuable uranium deposits, not to protect children from abuse, a rally was told in Melbourne.
About 30 demonstrators mingled with shoppers and tourists as two didgeridoo players kicked off the Stop the Genocide on Stolen Aboriginal Land rally at 12.30pm (AEST) today on the corner of Collins and Swanston Streets in the city centre.
Protest organiser Robbie Thorpe, who was also behind the Black GST and Camp Sovereignty protests during the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne last year, said the Federal Government had no interest in the welfare of indigenous children.
"It's the only bit of land the commonwealth government hasn't got access to and there are minerals like uranium there,'' Mr Thorpe told the rally.
"That's what it's about.
"How can you believe Howard? He don't give a f**k about our kids.''
Mr Thorpe told the crowd that indigenous Australians had suffered from 100 years of abuse.
"You (the Federal and State Governments) have taken our people to the brink,'' Mr Thorpe said.
"There has been 100 years of human rights' crimes against our people,'' he said.
"Things are not going to change until there is a treaty (with the indigenous community) in this country.''
The rally ended with protesters walking around the block along Swanston Street, Flinders Street and Collins Street before ending at City Square.
The protest was part of a national day of action being held in capital cities and Alice Springs.

INDIGENOUS people will never agree to the abolition of the permit system in the Northern Territory nor the land rights they fought so hard to earn, a Sydney protest has been told.
Around 250 demonstrators marched today from Redfern, inner-Sydney's Aboriginal heart, to the city's town hall to protest against the federal government's intervention in Northern Territory indigenous communities.
The marchers met at The Block in Redfern at 10.30am (AEST) before making their way to Sydney's CBD where they were addressed by Aboriginal leaders.
The protesters were angry about the federal government's compulsory acquisition of remote indigenous communities and the abolition of the permit system, which they consider a land grab.
The demonstrators waved banners bearing the message, "Justice, where the bloody hell are ya?'' and bellowed chants about land rights as they held up traffic on the 30-minute march into the city.
Pat Turner, a member of the Combined Aboriginal Organisations (CAO) and chief executive of the new National Indigenous Television (NITV) service, told the crowd that a six-month emergency intervention to tackle child abuse would be acceptable.
But it had to be done in partnership with local Aborigines and be followed up with a fully-funded long-term strategy to provide services.
"We'll show you how to do it properly,'' she said.
"Leave the police at home, leave the soldiers at home, and let the real workers come in.''
Ms Turner said Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory had endured a long, hard struggle to win land rights in 1975 and were not about to give them up.
"We will not say yes to removing the permit system and we will never agree to the removal of inalienable freehold title,'' she said.
She called on Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd to differentiate himself from the government's position or risk losing the black vote.
The Sydney protest is part of a national day of action against the intervention being held in every capital, as well as Alice Springs.

Too often these other Maori are parasites that thrive on stolen aboriginal lands, profiting by the natives sufferings. They refuse to support our oppressed brothers and sisters.

I am a Maori residing in W.A. , I would like to ask how many of you
have been to the Territory and seen what goes on up there ?.
Very few I would say ., 98% of Australians have never been up onto
those Missions .
Maybe a better insight of this issue should be given before involving
the Maori in this, we should take care of our own backyard before
trying to clean up our neighbours.

The number of Maori living in Australia has increased 27 percent over five
years.
The number of people of Maori ancestry rose from just under 73,000 to almost
93,000.
The figures are in the 2006 Australian Census results released this week.
Massey University geographer Manuhuia Barcham, who has been studying Maori
migration to Australia, says the increase is probably due to a mix of
migration and self-identification.
Manuhuia Barcham says the mining boom in Western Australia is also drawing
many Maori workers.
On this side of the Tasman, 565,000 people identified themselves as Maori in
last year's Census.

I hear some of our Maori 'leaders' have also publicly stated tangata whenua o Aotearoa should stay out of Aussie "political issues". I totally agree, who gives a f*ck about Gubba politics? But stay out of indigenous self-determination issues *which this kaupapa clearly is)? Na bro, thats not aroha!

Re: NZ should: "butt out"
" if John Howard did that , it would open up the doors for a legal time bomb here , and who would end up paying the Australian tax payer .
New Zealand has quite a long of history of politely (more or less) telling foreign politicians to back up and butt out of our domestic politics. Perhaps it might be time to repay the courtesy?
As for the intervention in the N.T. Maybe you should comment less of these issues , unless you have had a insight of these things ."
The Invasion of the NT is a Human Rights issue.
SHAME on these Maori wanna-be-Ozzy's that insist we, "clean up" our own backyard. They're ignorant.
Weren't the Blacks in South Africa "liberated"by those from other countries who chose to stand up and speak out about issues pertaining to oppression..?
I know it's hard to make silk purses from pigs ears but the education of some is disgracefully lacking. Just look at this pakeha NZ redneck !@#

Perhaps the NZ government should follow suit and send in the army to deal with child abuse in NZ???
As a CYPS social worker says,
"It’s not that it happens for only just us Maori...” After all abuse is a symptom of dysfunction.
He says, “How did we get so dysfunctional is the question that should be asked. Or why is it that we are always at the bottom of the pile...on all negative stats??
Is that because we choose to be?”
Worse than any white racist though, this uppity phoney Maori woman in WA, like far too many of her ilk, actually legitimises racism against Aboriginal Peoples in Australia.

Are there some local news sites I can get reports from? www.aboriginalnews.com is sadly lacking. And Indymedia Australia seems to have crumbled.
Perhaps an Indymedia type team could go up and make some contact, spread the word about what is going on? The near total demise of Indymedia Australia is all a bit sad. Uriohau, would you go if a fund could be raised? How much would be needed?

Moreover, MIO supports the police, known to brutalise Aboriginal youth already and disowns Maori youth as, 'gangs', simply for walking the roads. What next?
The woman's husband is reported to earn between $5-6K per week in QLD. That is hush money and she, simply a potato, brown only on the outside, like other colonial house-pets.

There is now the equivalent of a 747 load of New Zealanders heading across the Tasman each week for a better life in Australia, and it seems the pull is strongest for our Maori population.
An estimated one in five Maori now live in Australia, with numbers expected to rise to one in three in the not-too-distant future. The booming economy and the more predictable climate are huge drawcards.
With great pay, a great lifestyle, and what they say is greater acceptance of the Maori culture, who could blame them? There are drawbacks however -- whanau at home often accuse them of turning their backs on New Zealand. And though they are trying to escape the gang culture here, it seems the gangs have followed them across the ditch. So do the pluses outweigh the minuses? Will they stay in the Lucky Country for good? Reporter Rod Vaughan investigates.
