Alliance launches campaign against “pokie” machines in West Auckland

The Alliance Party is to back up its stance against “pokie” machines in Waitakere City where there is a high number of victims of this addictive form of gambling.
Alliance Auckland chairperson Robert van Ruyssevelt says the Alliance wants to return the licensing trust to its core business of sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages in a responsible way that meets the needs of local people.

He says the Alliance wants to remove “pokie” machines from all premises owned or operated by the trust as soon as possible.

The Alliance has called a public meeting on the issue at the Kelston Community Centre, corner Great North Road and Awaroa Road at 2.00pm Saturday 28 July 2007.

Mr van Ruyssevelt says the meeting will invite candidates for the licensing trusts to pledge support for this aim, and says they will be welcome to state their views on this important question.

He says the Alliance will, if necessary, nominate members to stand in areas where such support is not forthcoming.

At the meeting, the CEO of the Problem Gambling Foundation of New Zealand John Stansfield (who is not associated with the political campaign) will outline the nature of the problems associated with “pokies” especially in West Auckland.

Mr van Ruyssevelt says many social agencies and individuals will know of gamblers, and their families and friends, affected by the blight of "pokie" addiction.

"Many will welcome the opportunity to take action."

"the Alliance wants to return the licensing trust to its core business of sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages in a responsible way that meets the needs of local people"

You middle class idiots really don't understand do you? Alcohol is the biggest societal problem in this nation, and who does it effect? The working class poor while the Lion Nathan fat cats get rich.

Alcohol is used to keep the working classes down - in particular tangata whenua (just look at what the white europeans did when they first arrived - got maori pissed so they could rape and pillage).

Shame on you Alliance.

Re: Alliance launches campaign against “pokie” machines in West Auckland

The Alliance would agree with you that alcohol is a major problem in our society. At this stage we are campaigning against pokies, which is another serious problem. However I am not sure what you are suggesting? That we ban alcohol? That won' t work.

It needs to be regulated heavily. A lot of work needs to be done in the area of health care, prevention and education. This could be paid for by higher taxation on the alcohol companies.

I don't understand why you feel the need to describe people you don't know as middle class idiots. It doesn't help your argument. It just serves to antagonize people who largely agree with you. How about a positive suggestion?

Ngaa mihi mahana ki a koutou katoa

Dear dear me. U folks from the Alliance just dont have a clue at all. Why dont u read a post proerly This person said :

"Alcohol is used to keep the working classes down - in particular tangata whenua "

Why dont u address the issues brought up and the class struggle? Why dont u address the fact that we have done all ur dumb stupid stuff and still our hunuku and whanau are dieing while u play games with the oppressors.

What you are saying is can u please not use such big bullets when u shoot at us Pleaseeeeee ( in a begging tone of cause),
as we have to beg for everything. You in the Alliance are middle Class and the middle class are our enemys so what should we say to u all? Thanks for the hand out? Once again ...and please try to listen now.... Governments were put in place to allow capitialism , the money makers, to keep control. How can the low income win using their system?

Dont come to places like this pretending u are on our side. The simple fact is you dont even understand us. Be honest with yourselves. Middle class and proud you should say. Then we can be clearer about your "good works". I am sure u also support church charity as a way of helping us poor folks. Please be aware.

WE ARE POOR IN MONEY NOT IN INTELLIGENCE.

Be very careful. We have teeth and we bite hard. ; )

Re: Alliance launches campaign against “pokie” machines in West Auckland

Don't you think your anger is a little misdirected?
The Alliance is made up of all sorts of people: in my local branch our activists include students, workers, unemployed, academics, small business people, retired people. So your idea about who we are seems to be driven by prejudice.
I always find its more useful to value people on their contribution and their sincerity as opposed to their class, race or gender. I'm interested to hear how you feel you are making a difference?

Interesting comment. Class means nothing to the middle class. U see u talk about anger but there is no anger in making sure we are all aware who the enemy is. You can have your anger and your middle class bullshit. I will stick with the people who understand struggle.

I think you had better stop posting you are making yourself look like a fool. Open debate is what we need, and honesty. You simply dont have a clue how the working class think.

Re: Alliance launches campaign against “pokie” machines in West Auckland

Well, considering the working class largely vote for the National and Labour Parties at election time, perhaps its you who may be out of touch.

What is your definition of working class and middle class? Is it based on wealth, education, taste in wallpaper, expected future earnings?

If you took the time to actually consider what the Alliance proposes you would see our policies are about promoting equality and building up the wellbeing of the working class and those struggling.

The thing is its very easy to hide behind anonymous comments, and name calling. I wonder if these comments are those of a troll – there seems to be a few around here at the moment. If you are genuine, perhaps you should suggest your views on how things can be set right.

Re: Alliance launches campaign against “pokie” machines in West Auckland

The problem Mr Billot is that your party advocates restricting the capitalist free market when you should be advocating its removal altogether.

It is the free market and its wealthy multinational overlords that are oppressing our people.

Na,
Rewi

Re: Alliance launches campaign against “pokie” machines in West Auckland

I think it is a mistake to write off the Alliance as not radical enough etc. I think you would find there is a lot fo common ground, with the party and certianly with individual members. The Alliance is certianly the party the closest to the kinds of ideas prominent here on indymedia. When it comes down to voting, doesn't that make sense? Sectarianism is what is making the left weak. There are plenty of us, but we are all looking for a perfect group or party, and end up breaking off to form our own. We need to realise that it is a time when we have to stick together against common enemies and for common goals. When the left is the dominant power we can discuss internal divisions.

I understand some of what you say about the Alliance (eg capitalism - reform vs remove), but i think all in all a few posters here have been unfair. The Alliance isn't "middle class", and shouldn't be judged on class, but they do care about the ISSUE of class.
I think you are angry. I'm happy to hear argument and criticism, but this place is becoming so full of bitterness and bile. It's not cool

Re: Alliance launches campaign against “pokie” machines in West Auckland

Rewi – that is a fair point. The Alliance does not advocate the wholesale instant destruction of the capitalist system. What we do seek is the removal and regulation of its most cruel features in the short term, and a progressive takeback of economic and social power over the medium to long term.
This would mean putting major parts of the economy in public/democratic ownership. The market mechanism would remain in some areas but would certainly not be allowed to control and oppress people as it does now.
So we may differ in how we see the solution coming about, but I would say to you that we probably have a lot in common as well. Maybe we should focus on that?

As for the last comment, I agree. For a community of people dedicated to a more open, tolerant and democratic society, there seems to be a really negative vibe here at times. Especially since we (presumably) have much in common.
