Unite Media: Hotel Workers Locked Out
Just a week after the lockout by Spotless of hospital staff was lifted another employer has locked-out workers.
Gateway Airport Hotel staff in Mangere Auckland have been locked out on August 3.
The members of Unite union had taken strike action on 1 August after the employer had stalled negotiations for a collective agreement for nearly a year.
“This is a viciously anti-union employer” said Unite organiser Daphna Whitmore. “The wages and conditions are well below industry standards” she said. The Labour Department is currently investigating the hotel after complaints that the cleaning staff were being paid below the minimum wage.
This hotel made headlines last year when a pregnant employee was refused ongoing employment. Her case is currently before the courts.
Unite is calling on people to join a picket outside the hotel at 4pm on Saturday 206 Kirkbride Road, Mangere. END
