Alliance Party holds 2007 national conference in Dunedin

The Alliance Party is holding its 2007 national conference in Dunedin on Labour Weekend, Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 October.
Delegates will gather from around New Zealand to elect co-leaders for the 2008 election year, discuss new policy and strategy, and hear from high profile speakers in open to the public sessions.

Alliance Party President Victor Billot says the party is positioning itself as the "strong left wing voice" in New Zealand politics.

He says the Alliance has key political goals based around the "public good" including free education, quality public health care, affordable housing and power, and secure well paid jobs.

"We seek a much more equal society where all people have access to the basics, which will create a more stable, secure and democratic New Zealand."

The conference is being held in the Alexander MacMillan Room, Community House, 283 Moray Place (corner Great King Street), Dunedin.

The conference will be opened at 10am Saturday 20 October by the National President of the Maritime Union, Phil Adams.

The two conference speakers are political writer Chris Trotter and publisher Jack Yan - both sessions are open to the public with free entry.

Chris Trotter: guest speaker
At 1.30pm on Saturday 20 October, political commentator and author Chris Trotter will present “Re-claiming our Past: The Left’s Crucial Role in New Zealand’s History.”
Chris Trotter is well known as the leading public intellectual of the left in New Zealand, a role he has recently confirmed with the publication of “No Left Turn”, a political and social history of New Zealand and the quest for social justice.

Jack Yan: guest speaker
At 1pm on Sunday 21 October, publisher and branding expert Jack Yan will discuss “The use of brands and innovation to achieve full employment in New Zealand.”
Jack Yan has worked internationally on global branding projects, started the first digital typeface design company in New Zealand and was one of the first web publishers in New Zealand.
His views on socially responsible business, design and globalization are challenging and relevant.

Re: Alliance Party holds 2007 national conference in Dunedin

I can't make it unfortunately.

But good luck.

And PLEASE don't decide to wind the party up. We can get back to Parliament...we just have to believe we can and unite the social democratic left.

Re: Alliance Party holds 2007 national conference in Dunedin

Regarding the conference, there is no question of any "wind up", let me assure you. All indications at this stage are that we will be contesting the next general election, and continuing to build on the modest growth we've had this year.

Regarding, the new left parties, New Zealand has a "new left" party and has had one for a number of years, called the Alliance . . . working both inside and outside parliament, as the Left Party in Germany do. So there is no need to reinvent the wheel in New Zealand, although we are always willing to discuss things with genuine people in other groups.

Re: Alliance Party holds 2007 national conference in Dunedin

Can we get back into Parliament Victor? Is there a feeling it is do or die in 2008, or are we just happy to sit on the sidelines forever?

In my opinion we have to go all out!

Re: Alliance Party holds 2007 national conference in Dunedin

Whether we get back into Parliament or not depends on how many people vote for us. This in turn largely depends on how many activists and members we have. In any case, we will be building an alternative.
This is not a particularly glamourous path, there's no short cuts, but it has to be done to get an eventual result.
We will be going all out, but my view is we have to be realistic that things may take time. In the past it seems as soon as things went backward, some people jumped ship "too hard" and tried to sink us on the way out.
However we're still here; and despite all the Charters, industrial activity and seminars on how they do it in Germany, we are still operating as a nationally based, democratic socialist party, and there ain't many others.
In fact the only serious party doing similar work may be the Workers Party. However while we may share some goals, the two outfits are very different in political orientation.

Democrats for Social Credit.

Feel free to walk the same path Alliance people, if you are able to put Democracy b4 Politics, Authenticity before Circumstance, which has always been the whole conundrum to start with...
I wouldn't care if it's you or us that implements the above referenced JUST and INDEPENDENT system that works for all citizens; but more than likely a significent amount of people who hold positions in your party would....which is perhaps why you are right about the only other party doing "similar" work is the workers party...

Re: Re: Re: Alliance Party holds 2007 national conference in Dunedin

The Democrats are still around?

Sheesh.

Nationally organised?!!

The cruel and unfortunate truth is that the Alliance would be lucky to get twenty people together in Auckland. I doubt there is a regular branch meeting in Aotearoa's biggest city outside of Friday night drinks in Galbraiths anymore. Many of its dedicated cadre have moved on to serious work in the trade union movement, and have more friendly relations with "genuine" leftists outside Victor's nationally organised social democratic mirage as a result.

Re: Alliance Party holds 2007 national conference in Dunedin

Well, its true that we don't have much of a support base in Auckland currently. But who does? (Actually three million of us live outside Auckland and show no signs of dying of embarrassment from our lack of relevance.)

I'm not sure what "serious trade union" work is supposed to imply. As it happens I am a serious (I suppose) trade unionist (work for Maritime Union) and we have quite a few delegates, members and organizers involved from other unions including NUPE, PPTA, MUNZ and Southern Local Government Union. We choose to be active in working in the political field as well as the industrial field.

What other people do is up to them, although of course if we had just a couple of hundred extra active members then it would obviously get rolling a bit quicker.

No doubt we're a small party. But we are actually doing something, and keeping a democratic socialist presence going. To you that may be a mirage. But I suggest just bagging people doing something is more of a mirage.

Whenever I hear someone use the words like dedicated cadre it sends a shiver up my spine.

As for the Democrats for Social Credit, I simply don't understand what that comment is about.

Re: Re: Alliance Party holds 2007 national conference in Dunedin

I think the Workers Party have a pretty decent presence in Auckland.

There's no way you can get back into Parliament without an active Auckland organistion. Despite 3 million people living outside of our largest city, that is the reality of politics.

Re: Alliance Party holds 2007 national conference in Dunedin

Well obviously we are trying to build a bigger Auckland presence. But I think that there is also much work to be done outside Auckland and in fact the Alliance has always done better in provincial areas a lot of the time. What's wrong with that?

I don't think there is much point comparing the Alliance and the Workers Party because they have different politics.
