Christchurch Open Rescue takes 37 hens out of life of misery (inc video)

Video of the open rescue can be viewed at YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch

The Christchurch Open Rescue collective has rescued 37 young hens from a Canterbury battery farm, saving them from living a life of misery in battery cages. The group is part of the wider Open Rescue network across New Zealand, which has rescued battery hens and documented the plight of factory farmed pigs and broiler chickens since beginning in 2006. Open Rescue members openly break the law to rescue animals from exploitation, and document the horrific conditions they live in (1).

"These hens were destined to become some of the 2.8 million hens exploited in battery farms in New Zealand. Instead, we have given them the gift of a normal life, which they have welcomed with open arms in the days since they were rescued" said Christchurch Open Rescue member Tracey Brown.

"The chickens are now having dirt baths, eating fresh greenery and will soon be laying eggs for the first time, free from the battery farm conditions where they struggled to even have enough space to turn around" (2) said Rebecca McCready, another Christchurch Open Rescue member, "In the sheds we took them from, we witnessed half-metre high piles of faeces and feathers left uncleaned, and an apparent complete lack of access to water."

"The recent prosecution of Trevor Chin, the owner of the Wellington Egg Company, by the SPCA, gave everybody a glimpse into the horrifying conditions present in battery farms across the country," said Chrischurch Open Rescue member Douglas Hesp "The shameful truth for battery farmers is that this was not an isolated case of cruelty, but instead more or less the norm in this disgusting industry."

"The rescue of these 37 hens has two purposes, to give them a chance at a decent life, and also to expose the battery farming industry to all New Zealanders. We encourage everyone to think carefully about where the eggs they eat come from, and not to fall for the "farm fresh" fallacy, which is simply another name for battery cages" stated Christchurch Open Rescue member Daniel Rae, "Our group starting is just one example of the growth of Open Rescue across New Zealand, and we are committed to openly breaking the law and rescuing battery hens from their lives of misery until battery cages are abolished"

Re: Re: Christchurch Open Rescue takes 37 hens out of life of misery (inc video)

Thanks for putting this material here because I've learned heaps. Now I'm off to throw money at a hypocritical group like the NZAVS or SAFE and then I'll have meat and eggs for dinner tonight, followed by cow’s milk and honey in my cup of tea.

Re: Christchurch Open Rescue takes 37 hens out of life of misery (inc video)

Awesome thanks heaps for this :) Glad to hear they are enjoying a life of freedom :)

Re: Re: Christchurch Open Rescue takes 37 hens out of life of misery (inc video)

Big deal only 37 hens saved. What about the rest! There are over 60 million hens being kept in New Zealand like this, so 37 divided by 60 million equals one laughable percentage. I get that straight feeling of deja senti.

Re: Christchurch Open Rescue takes 37 hens out of life of misery (inc video)

well done guys!!!
lets all get active in our cities and get more hens out of these hell holes.
Its gone on for long enough and the govt has proven it doesnt give a damn.

Re: Christchurch Open Rescue takes 37 hens out of life of misery (inc video)

The government treats people like battery hens too - much easier to manage them that way.

Re: Christchurch Open Rescue takes 37 hens out of life of misery (inc video)

Awesome work guys!!! Now hopefully NZers will see the brutal reality of factory farming in NZ!! Go vegan and avoid it!! :)

Re: Christchurch Open Rescue takes 37 hens out of life of misery (inc video)

Yay!! you guys are fucking awesome!!!

Re: Christchurch Open Rescue takes 37 hens out of life of misery (inc video)

Good on you!
But in order to stop the cruelty it is imperative to get the public informed.
Consumers in NZ can shut down these horrible operations by voting with their dollars.
Education is the key!
There are some cool LPFM stations in Auckland, Wellington and one in Dunedin that inform the citizens.
It would be nice to see one in Christchurch...

Re: Christchurch Open Rescue takes 37 hens out of life of misery (inc video)

The New Zealand Cup and Show Week is coming up in Otautahi. www.nzcupandshow.co.nz/2007 What are the Open Rescue people or any other animal right's activists going to do about that? Are they going to rescue any of our animal friends that are being exploitated by the horse racing industry at the Addington Raceway or farmers at the AMP Show? Probably nothing is planned! How about at least some protests?

Re: Re: Christchurch Open Rescue takes 37 hens out of life of misery (inc video)

what are you going to do about it?
don't leave it to others, get in and do it yourself.

Re: Re: Christchurch Open Rescue takes 37 hens out of life of misery (inc video)

I don’t think any AR folk in Otautahi will do a thing about this since the AR groups in the Garden City never protest against these events. Take for example Safe. It always sits by and let all of this happen without a peep from them. Just look at indymedia.org.nz/feature/display/71693/index.php to see the type of disturbed loon that’s in charge of it to understand why. Also maybe they don’t do anything because they consider protesting about this a bad business decision since it would upset mainstream society too much i.e. they don’t want to disrupt their income from the everyday people that support them.

From the NZ Herald:

"We'll strike again, say battery hen raiders

Tracey Brown of Christchurch Open Rescue with one of the hens the group says is now enjoying fresh greenery and open space.

A group raiding battery hen farms to free dozens of the animals says it is justified in breaking the law because the farmers' actions are far worse.

Christchurch Open Rescue, one of three open rescue groups carrying out raids around the country, has released photographs from its recent foray onto a private Canterbury battery farm in which it took 37 hens from their cages.

"In the sheds we took them from, we witnessed half-metre high piles of faeces and feathers left uncleaned, and an apparent complete lack of access to water," said group member Rebecca McCready.

In another raid about two months ago at another farm, it released about 30 of the birds."

From The Press:

"Christchurch hen liberationists strike

A "hen liberation" by a Christchurch animal activist group was conducted so quietly that two weeks later, the farmers did not even know they had been burgled.

A group calling itself Christchurch Open Res cue contacted The Press yesterday to say it had "rescued" 37 young hens from a farm in Prebbleton.

Unfortunately, the group, which says it prides itself on operating openly and not doing damage, took the hens with so little damage the farmers had to be informed by The Press that they were victims."

pook pook pookie!!

Re: Christchurch Open Rescue takes 37 hens out of life of misery (inc video)

Have to say I'm a bit concerned about the fact that Free range farming was promoted on this video.

Free range farming hens are still killed after their production level is seen to been too low and the males birds all end up in the mincing machines as they do in battery hen farming.

No form of expolitation should be seen as more acceptable than another. It is ALL WRONG and people especially activists should not be promoting it ever.

Rescue was great but next time leave out the buy free range crap.

Re: Re: Christchurch Open Rescue takes 37 hens out of life of misery (inc video)

I agree with this to a point, but if we can stop Joe Public firstly from buying battery eggs then that is a really good start. At least the hens that live will have a decent quality of life. Unfortunately nothing changes overnight, and alot of education will be needed to make people realise what atrocities are happenning.

Re: Christchurch Open Rescue takes 37 hens out of life of misery (inc video)

I'm against animal exploitation and certainly agree with a hardline against it. should we compromise for the sake of strategy and suggest to others free range as an initial step towards becoming more active and aware on the general issue? if we moved public opinion against factory farming firstly and towards vegetarianism and then veganism isn't that more realistic than urging everyone to take leaps and bounds from blatant meat-eating with unaware consumer-purchasing habits to total avoidance of mainstream supermarket consumption for example? isn't the road to awareness and action a meandering one rather than a direct one for a lot of people? tim blackhe@rt

Agree. To misquote Arlo Guthrie, May the great chicken of paradise crap all over your house.

Re: Christchurch Open Rescue takes 37 hens out of life of misery (inc video)

If we stick with a mineral only diet, that will save animals, vegetables from exploitation.
The best and most obvious minerals for human consumption are
salt
coal
human faeces

eating these minerals not only provides a tasty and nutritious diet, but it helps keep the world free from exploitation.
dont follow the soft-line, colaborationist sell out vegans. A vegan is basically the same as a carnivore.
Why should we allow more life to be destroyed, whether it be animal or vegetable, when there is plenty of mineral food resources.

Eat shit and die - viva la mineralucion!

Re: Christchurch Open Rescue takes 37 hens out of life of misery (inc video)

Well done!!! You have chosen the path to liberation out of the concentration camp agriculture implemented by the Monopoly Corporations and their stooges. Even though the mumbers are small now, you have set the true path to animal liberation and the example will revererate for generations to come. Our Cariboo Chickens have been liberated the same way and it took over twenty-five years till the mother hens could raise their own clutches of chicks from the wild again. The state organized terror that the Bushco has put in place includes the concentration camp agriculture which is not limited to chickens allone, but to the entire domestic animal and plant species. He exclaims, his polluted, exploitation of plants and animals as the way forward that all on the planet must learn from. Instead, we must liberate the domestic plants and animals from Bushco's destructive fascistic ways of global terror.

Re: Re: Christchurch Open Rescue takes 37 hens out of life of misery (inc video)

The Wellington SPCA successfully prosecuted a factory farmer. He was sentenced to 400 hours community service, fined 30,000 dollars plus costs and more importantly he was banned from keeping birds for 10 years, effectively shutting his hell-hole down. It was the first successful prosecution of a factory farmer so it will create a precedent and make other prosecutions easier.

So have you considered going to the SPCA as well as the media. It will not take many more prosecutions to have them all running scared and quitting the business before they are forced out of it.

Great work Open rescue. Keep up the great work.

Re: Christchurch Open Rescue takes 37 hens out of life of misery (inc video)

You did a good work, thank you.
I love hens, are beautiful and intelligents animals, are not "inferiors" of cats or dogs.
I don't understand why are considerate second level animals.
I'm hoping you can find a way to save more hen, and pigs, cows and all farm animals.

HOW DO I GET INVOLVED???

brillant. Good for you for bringing this situation to light. Im in. :)
