1000 + in Hikoi ki Whakatane
Over 1000 peoples participated in the Whakatane Hikoi today.
Over 1000 peoples participated in the Whakatane Hikoi today. A Ruatoki kura kaupapa kapa haka group peformed powerful haka (te wehi, te ihi, te wana!) as the hikoi reached the local whare poaka. A petition demanding police terrorism of Tuhoe people and childrens cease immediately was presented.
A school bus driver for the local area refuted police claims no buses had been boarded by armed police.

Its a shame you don't spend as much time encouraging them to get an education and change the system from within without resorting to guns and violence.
Pathetic.

If you are going to comment, then do it with facts, Whare Kura kids are top in maths in this country, they learn three to four languages, more than the monolingual middle NZ clots in this country. They are more politically aware than your average kid, and therefore are more vocal than your average kid, they are well informed of the issues and they are allowed to act upon them, last time I looked every citizen of this country has the right to protest, even children. What is middle NZ going to legislate that right away as well? Just like the Foreshore and Seabed. When was the last time a Pakeha kid under the age of 5 had guns pointed at THEM. If it was Pakeha kids on that bus there would be friggen outrage. Thanks for the support Pakeha from Aus

C. The criminalization of indigenous protest activities
44. One of the more serious human rights protection deficiencies in
recent years is the trend towards the use of laws and the justice system
to penalize and criminalize social protest activities and legitimate
demands made by indigenous organizations and movements in defence of
their rights. Reports indicate that these tendencies appear in two
guises: the application of emergency legislation such as anti-terrorist
laws, and accusing social protestors of common misdemeanours
(such as trespassing) to punish social protests. Examples from various
parts of the world have come to the attention of the Special Rapporteur.

of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people

URGENT APPEAL: Raids and arrests against Maori by the New Zealand government
Please receive our respectful greetings.
The International Indian Treaty Council, an Indigenous NGO with Consultative Status before ECOSOC, has received many emails from Maori friends and associates in New Zealand concerning massive raids in Maori Communities against Maori activists, by the Government of New Zealand acting under recently adopted so-called “Terrorism Suppression” legislation:
On Monday, October 15, the government of New Zealand began a series of home invasions, raids and interrogation under threats of terrorist activities against the state. The Crown has decided to employ its recent Terrorism Suppression Act to lockdown on social justice activist, Houses continue to be being invaded, possessions confiscated and charges being threatened which will allow for Maori activists to be charged under the Terrorist Suppression Act that carries sentencing for life.
The ages of people currently under custody range from 18 – 64. Many being arrested and held are young people trying to do good things for Maori communities. These events are allegedly the largest scale operation headed by special operations from the Head of States Office. There appears yet no explanation for the timing of these invasions. The indigenous movement for self - determination is what is being blamed by the media for instigating acts of terrorism.

Re: 1000 + in Hikoi ki Whakatane
Don't you dare speak on behalf of maori. My parents sent me to school, uni etc and have high expectations - and taught me not to expect anything from anyone. I've never even seen, let alone held a gun and have never been arrested. So before you try and fit a square peg into a round hole, think again.
