Eight car loads of police served a search warrant on the house of veteran trade unionist Jimmy O Dea, this afternoon in Bastion Point. Jimmy has been an active supporter of Tino Rangatiratanga, helping to organise the green ban during the Bastion Piont Occupation in the late 70s. A member of Socialist Worker and a volunteer organiser with the Solidarity Union, Jimmy has played an active role in the last week in the Civil Rights Defence Committee, protesting the Terror Laws and the imprisonment without trial of 18 activists.

MAORI YESTERDAY: TRADE UNIONS TODAY?

Union activists say that a police raid on a 72-year
old trade unionist in poor health today is part of a
crackdown on all political activists.

This afternoon at 2pm, eight police cars raided the
Orakei house of Jimmy O'Dea, a 72-year-old trade
unionist in poor health. The house was searched under
a warrant mentioning a kidnapping in the area.

Jimmy O'Dea says that when he told the police he was
too old to be involved in any such thing, the police
replied: "No you're not."

"Jimmy O'Dea has been a fighter for both Maori and
trade union rights for decades now," said Joe Carolan,
secretary of Solidarity Union.

"Jimmy helped to organise trade union support for the
Bastion Point occupation in 1978.

"Despite his poor health, he's been helping organise
the new Solidarity union among industrial workers in
South Auckland.

"To anyone who knows Jimmy, the idea that he could be
involved in a kidnapping is purely ridiculous," said
Joe Carolan.

"But what is true is that Jimmy is known as a fighter
for workers' rights and Maori rights. The police know
him as a 'troublemaker' from way back.

"If this is a coincidence, it's a very peculiar one,"
said Carolan.

"We have been saying that the "anti-terror" raids of
last week are an attempt to strike fear in the heart
of all political activists.

"This raid on a 72-year old man in poor health just
confirms what we've been saying."

I'm going to tell the largely untold story of the significant contribution to the struggle made by the organised working class.

...Auckland leaders of the Communist party met with the Orakei Maori Action Committee for authorisation to approach workers to win support for the land occupation and the Green Ban.

Jimmy O'Dea and Trent Richards led the Communist's practical work in this campaign, which involved some 40 party members at its height. The Orakei Maori Action Committee elected Jimmy O'Dea and Willy Pirama to call meetings with industrial workers all around Auckland.

A priority was talking to staff at Wilson Rothery, contracted to build roads through the Bastion point sub-division. With backing from their Maori job delegate, Bill Abraham, Wilson Rothery workers voted to support the green ban and refuse to open up the land. They also offered financial support to the occupiers. Without road builders, little else could be done at bastion Point.

Another early meeting was arranged with NZ Breweries workers through their walking delegate Tom McClintock. Occupation delegates visited the brewery along with trades council officials. Workers pledged financial support to the occupation, levying themselves $2 each per week.

This practical alliance between workers and Maori delivered the occupation's Meeting House. Jimmy O'Dea asked his friend, Irish activist, Alfie Byrne, to approach Irish contractors, Green& McCahill with a $100 tender to remove a large wooden warehouse in Wiri.

The leftwing Bower brothers who operated a small trucking firm, loaned their vehicles to transport the demolished warehouse to Bastion point.

The cops are as stupid as they are sinister. This sort of blundering attempt at intimidation shows that they're on the back foot, though. Comment here:

The going rate for raiding the wrong address is a payout of about $50,000. I reckon that should be doubled for an unwell 72 year old.

... and given that they had already arrested the alleged offender at another Kupe Road address they should have realised that the warrant was bogus.

To proceed with the search in the face of that evidence smacks of malice.
