November 5th - anniversary of the death of Barry Horne and of the first New Zealand Open Rescue of 20 battery hens from Turk's Poultry in 2006.
November 5th 2006 saw New Zealand's first Open Rescue of 20 battery hens from Turk's Poultry in Foxton. The action was carried out as a result of growing frustration at the lack of Government response despite the huge public outcry against battery cages. New Zealand activists from all over the country took part in the raid which was the first of many Open Rescues and investigations.
November 5th is also the anniversary of the death of Barry Horne, an animal liberation activist who died in a UK prison hospital on November 5th 2001. He had been sentenced to 18 years in prison for various criminal attacks against companies involved in vivisection.
In prison he went on hunger strike several times in protest against government support for the vivisection industry, and their broken pre-election promises about animal experiments. The third of these hunger strikes lasted 68 days, and Barry never fully recovered.
His actions generated worldwide publicity, and initiated a huge upsurge in animal liberation activity, the effects of which are still being felt even today.
Over the last six months, NZ Open Rescue has been conducting an investigation into an Auckland battery hen farm. 30 hens have been rescued from their cages during the investigation, which has uncovered typically horrendous conditions.
We dedicate the rescue of the latest six hens from their cages to the memory of Barry Horne. These hens have been placed into a wonderful new home and now have a chance to live a decent life.
"It is always easier to see the reasons why we cannot succeed, always easier to shrug our shoulders and believe the best we can do is try, almost as a token gesture. With no belief in success then success becomes so hard to achieve, almost an impossibility. A bit like Animal Liberation really, an impossible concept. We know it's not though, or else what are we fighting for? We should never be afraid to succeed or believe we can succeed. And we should never be afraid to reach for the stars if that's what it takes". Barry Horne, 1952 - 2001

GOOD WORK OPEN RESCUE!
Re: Re: Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne
"One member of the Open Rescue team is currently charged with burglary for his part in the Foxton battery hen rescue in 2006. His home and office was raided over this.
He could go to jail for rescuing suffering animals (or, in the eyes of the law, for theft of property)."

Barry Horne was sick

Just goes to show what some animal rights activists can be like i.e. obsessive and narcissistic to the point that they deluded themselves to believing that the end justifies any means, including causing harm.

Property damage vs violence
Those of you getting on your high horse about compassion and the letter of the law, ask yourselves this: if you saw a child being sexually molested through the window of a house, would you break into a house to stop this?
Strypey
Re: Property damage vs violence
As for your analogy of breaking into a house to save a child from being molested is poor because. 1) I wouldn’t put myself in danger. I would call the police and be a witness to the event no matter how unpleasant it maybe since I would rather be emotionally scared than dead. 2) Such a situation is highly unlikely to happen since most child molesters are more cunning than to do it in the open like that. They rather do it behind closed doors and drawn curtains, except for the fools that put themselves on the internet with fragmented pictures that can be defrag’ed. 3) I suspect you used such an analogy only to emotionally manipulate the weak and feeble minded.
So in future think before you put not beneficial comments here.
Thank you.

Those hens don't look too flash either. Good job they were rescued.
Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne
Reading between the lines at the judge's comments, it appears as if the judge wished he could have given them a jail term but was constrained by the law into having to give community service instead. However, Chin was also make to pay a substantial fine and banned from keeping birds for 10 years, so the main objective, that of closing down the factory, was achieved.
This is the first time a factory farm has been successfully prosecuted so it creates an important legal precedent. Given that Chin's factory farm was actually no worse than any other battery cage hellhole, it is a perfect opportunity for activists to make formal complaints under the Animal Welfare Act to other SPCAs, so that we can close them all down.
It is important however that complaints are made at the right time. I earlier made a complaint to Wellington SPCA about Wellington Egg farm, and they made an unannounced inspection, only to report that they could find no breaches. the reason was because the new hens had only just been put into the cages, so were not yet showing symptoms of their physical and psychological torture.
It was a worker at Chin's factory who later dobbed the scumbags in to the SPCA, and this time it was done when signs of suffering were more obvious.
