November 5th 2006 saw New Zealand's first Open Rescue of 20 battery hens from Turk's Poultry in Foxton. The action was carried out as a result of growing frustration at the lack of Government response despite the huge public outcry against battery cages. New Zealand activists from all over the country took part in the raid which was the first of many Open Rescues and investigations.

November 5th is also the anniversary of the death of Barry Horne, an animal liberation activist who died in a UK prison hospital on November 5th 2001. He had been sentenced to 18 years in prison for various criminal attacks against companies involved in vivisection.

In prison he went on hunger strike several times in protest against government support for the vivisection industry, and their broken pre-election promises about animal experiments. The third of these hunger strikes lasted 68 days, and Barry never fully recovered.

His actions generated worldwide publicity, and initiated a huge upsurge in animal liberation activity, the effects of which are still being felt even today.

Over the last six months, NZ Open Rescue has been conducting an investigation into an Auckland battery hen farm. 30 hens have been rescued from their cages during the investigation, which has uncovered typically horrendous conditions.

We dedicate the rescue of the latest six hens from their cages to the memory of Barry Horne. These hens have been placed into a wonderful new home and now have a chance to live a decent life.

"It is always easier to see the reasons why we cannot succeed, always easier to shrug our shoulders and believe the best we can do is try, almost as a token gesture. With no belief in success then success becomes so hard to achieve, almost an impossibility. A bit like Animal Liberation really, an impossible concept. We know it's not though, or else what are we fighting for? We should never be afraid to succeed or believe we can succeed. And we should never be afraid to reach for the stars if that's what it takes". Barry Horne, 1952 - 2001

Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

Cool great work :) Awesome to see familiar brave faces freeing these birds from a life of cruelty. I really hope the industry gets the horrific coverage it deserves as a result of this action.

Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

One day we'll look back at this and marvel at our society which allows this torture of creatures in the name of profit, but pillories those who are activists at the tipping point of social change, and would slander them as seekers of violence, as terrorists.
Peace and freedom to all who are cruelly caged, animal or humankind.

Re: Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

No animal rights activists are not terrorists. Even though some of them want to wipe out the human race to save other species. Of course others are less extreme because all want they want do is: burn down farmers houses, blow up labs that experiment on animals, drive bulldozers through butchers shops, smash shop windows that have fur coats in them and glue up TAB locks. Why the NZ Police have not locked up some of these people is beyond me.

Re: Re: Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

It looks like Mr Horne was one of these people by being caught with incendiary devices. Very frightening stuff!

Re: Re: Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

Listen you! Get a life!GO AWAY! No AR rights people want to know you. WE LOVE Barry Horne and we love other AR people. They rock! Mark Eden rocks! Frances Mountier and Strypey rock and heaps more and they are not weird! They are decent people. I suggest before you make any more rude comments you go and get educated. AR activists are some of the most compassionate people on the earth you idiot.

Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

Why aren’t these people arrested for trespassing?

Re: Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

The reason none of these people ever get done for trespass or theft is the fact that the farmers (if you can call them that I have better names for them),don't won't this to go to court as this would then bring to light their atrocities!
GOOD WORK OPEN RESCUE!

Re: Re: Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

Well that's a lie then isn't it? According to a statement below one person has been charged with theft. See!

"One member of the Open Rescue team is currently charged with burglary for his part in the Foxton battery hen rescue in 2006. His home and office was raided over this.

He could go to jail for rescuing suffering animals (or, in the eyes of the law, for theft of property)."

Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

is that really the biggest concern here?

why wasnt len richards arrested for assault this weekend?

why is it legal to have chickens in tiny cages in nz?

Re: Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

Things must be pretty good in Aotearoa if all that they have to be concerned about is activists and chickens.

Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

Good stuff!

Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

Isn't it funny that the New Zealand Police crack down hard on some activists while allowing these ones to be free range? It comes across as weird.

Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

I don't know where all this terroristism talk is coming from in Aotearoa because the real terrorists is the US of f#*kin' A.

See below for some proof!

Pax Americana indeed!

Not Uncle Sam's pole dancer anymore.

Re: Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

Yes, we do live in a world of Pax Americana. Here's better evidence.

Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

Given that Battery Hen Open Rescue ignores issues such as: school bullying means they do not understand why people mistreat animals.

Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

What important and compassionate work you people are doing for these animals and how fitting to honor the great Barry Horne this way. For a vegan world - one free of ALL 'bullying' [the proper term is control freaks] where all living beings can live their lives unmolested and not caged, mutilated, battered, beaten or killed by others.

Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

Awesome work! Thank you

Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

thank you for inspiring young americans to get off thier fat asses and do the same here.

Barry Horne was sick

Why would anyone want to honour Barry Horne? The guy was a nut with setting fires to department stores, destroying a branch of Boots Chemist, being called a "urban terrorist" and all.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Horne

Just goes to show what some animal rights activists can be like i.e. obsessive and narcissistic to the point that they deluded themselves to believing that the end justifies any means, including causing harm.

dictionary.reference.com/browse/obsessive

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissism

www.thefreedictionary.com/deluded

The guy was sick, so don't use him as a role model!

Re: Barry Horne was sick

Fortunately most folk associated with animal rights within Aotearoa are not as unhinged as this. Setting fires to shops is going over the top.

Re: Barry Horne was sick

thanks for the wikipedia link. I wasn’t aware how unwell b horne was. burning down shops and running around with incendiaries is way out there. to me he isn’t a hero but a zero now. luckily ar advocates in nz aren’t as excessive as this since they haven’t lost the foundation of ar of compassion. unlike some ar campaigners in the uk and usa.

Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

Its a shame animal rights postes always get such weird comments below them, all appear to be from the same person (troll).

Re: Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

It's disappointing that some people get so brainwashed by AR that they can't see that a few involved in it have a messiah complex.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messianic_complex

Re: Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

I don’t think it’s a troll because it’s far too intelligent for that. And they made a valid point because Barry H was unhealthy. The evidence supports it.

Re: Re: Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

Ignore the same person/troll comment. It is probably made because someone involved in the animal rights movement that can not accept that some people within it have forgotten the basics of animal rights: respect, compassion, etc. As already pointed out the NZ animal rights movement has not gone as far as what Barry did with the firebombing, etc. Which is something to be proud of. So let us hope that they never well. Rescuing is one thing but firebombing is something else which does not have my respect.

Property damage vs violence

Let's keep things in perspective here. What those battery cages do to those birds is torture - violence. Burning down a shop - as long as nobody is inside - is *not* violence. It may be questioned on the basis of tactical considerations, PR or fairness to property owners. But there is not doubt in my mind that the health and well-being of even a single animal (human or non-human) takes priority over the wellbeing on inanimate property.

Those of you getting on your high horse about compassion and the letter of the law, ask yourselves this: if you saw a child being sexually molested through the window of a house, would you break into a house to stop this?

Strypey

Re: Property damage vs violence

Strypey, it’s most disappointing to see that you put comments here that give the rest of us within the AR movement a bad name. Your attempt to justify burning down buildings/firebombing isn’t helpful because such action would alienate the community that the rest of us are trying to educate towards a more respectful, compassionate and healthy vegan world.

As for your analogy of breaking into a house to save a child from being molested is poor because. 1) I wouldn’t put myself in danger. I would call the police and be a witness to the event no matter how unpleasant it maybe since I would rather be emotionally scared than dead. 2) Such a situation is highly unlikely to happen since most child molesters are more cunning than to do it in the open like that. They rather do it behind closed doors and drawn curtains, except for the fools that put themselves on the internet with fragmented pictures that can be defrag’ed. 3) I suspect you used such an analogy only to emotionally manipulate the weak and feeble minded.

So in future think before you put not beneficial comments here.

Thank you.

Re: Property damage vs violence

I agree with Strypey, and shame on the people who call others names like Trolls. Its not very nice and is a very silly thing to do. I think there could be a person in the ar movement who likes to cause trouble. Not sure who it is, but obviously they are uneducated. Its sad and quite pathetic. Barry Horne was a great role model, and so what if he did burn down a department store. Who is going to miss it, a few capitalists? Sarah Watson

Re: Re: Property damage vs violence

You're a sick person to support firebombing, Sarah.

Re: Property damage vs violence

Yeah go Strypey! Awesome comments man! You rock!

Re: Re: Property damage vs violence

Wake up and grow up.

Re: Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

Weird comments because AR attracts weird people maybe?

Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

According to the WHO definition of health, everyone is unhealthy.
Those hens don't look too flash either. Good job they were rescued.

Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

Recently the Wellington Egg Company, run by scumbag Chin and his wife, was prosecuted for animal cruelty and closed down. Good on the Wellington SPCA for a successful prosecution.

Reading between the lines at the judge's comments, it appears as if the judge wished he could have given them a jail term but was constrained by the law into having to give community service instead. However, Chin was also make to pay a substantial fine and banned from keeping birds for 10 years, so the main objective, that of closing down the factory, was achieved.

This is the first time a factory farm has been successfully prosecuted so it creates an important legal precedent. Given that Chin's factory farm was actually no worse than any other battery cage hellhole, it is a perfect opportunity for activists to make formal complaints under the Animal Welfare Act to other SPCAs, so that we can close them all down.

It is important however that complaints are made at the right time. I earlier made a complaint to Wellington SPCA about Wellington Egg farm, and they made an unannounced inspection, only to report that they could find no breaches. the reason was because the new hens had only just been put into the cages, so were not yet showing symptoms of their physical and psychological torture.

It was a worker at Chin's factory who later dobbed the scumbags in to the SPCA, and this time it was done when signs of suffering were more obvious.

Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

What a weak ,pathetic person to be putting down compassionate folk, your a coward!unlike BH
RIP mate

Re: Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

What a bizarre statement. No wonder animal right’s does not have the admiration of the populace.

Re: Re: Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

ignore it as it is only spam by someone trying to discredit ar

Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

These Strypey and Barry characters are scary fellas. Justifing firebombing and doing it is unenlightened behaviour. No wonder my family and friends do not support the animal rights cause anymore.

Re: Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

Listen you, go away. You are putting down good people! Bugger off!

Re: Re: Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

Do good people firebomb? Get real! It only goes to show just what unhinged people that are involved with AR.

Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

It's sad to see more childish comments in an animal rights thread again. It spoils the name of the animal rights movement that the dedicated few are trying to perserve. Please stop it, Sarah, Strypey and Mark.

Re: Battery Hen Open Rescue Dedicated to Barry Horne

So is this what they feed us on the menu,eg Kfc etc & more.(maybe deseased infected Poultry)Look at the pictures 9what does that tell)
