Recent arrests in Wellington
11 activists/punks/anarchists have been arrested in the last two weeks in Wellington. The arrests relate to three different incidents. People are now being dragged through the courts on ridiculous charges, one person has at least one fractured rib and someone else’s bail conditions include a curfew!
Two weeks ago, two people were arrested and charged with ‘illegally being in a building.’ Chubb Security guards showed up at a house, called the cops and arrested one person and then went to someone’s house and arrested the owner of a car who was seen at the alleged squat earlier that night. The cops threatened the first person to charge her with burglary if she won’t cooperate with the cops (Needless to say that she didn’t cooperate.).
Last Friday, the cops showed up at a punk gig in Newtown at around 3am. They wanted to confiscate an amp. 8 people were arrested after telling the cops to leave them alone. Some people got badly beaten (one has a fractured rib). 4 people face charges including disorderly behavior, obstruction, resisting arrest and assaulting police while the 4 others will not be charged.
Last night, an anarchist was arrested at around 11pm. She is charged with willful damage for allegedly stenciling. After being taken to the police station, she was released on bail – with a curfew! She has to be at home from 9pm – 5am every night. The first chance to challenge those bail conditions will be on Monday at the District Court.
