140 workers are taking strike action at Brackenridge Estate. They are members of NUPE and NZNO, and they are taking strike action because the work they do providing vital care for people with intellectual disabilities is not recognised by their employer. They are funded by the ministry of health and it is high time the government stepped in to provide more funding for this sector. They are sitting in a huge surplus while care workers can’t are not paid anywhere near a liveable wage.
This is the first industrial action these workers have taken part in and it would be great to have as much support on the picket line as possible.
The picket will begin at 7:00am on Friday 11th January and continue until 7:00am on the 13th January. The address is 150 Maddisons Rd, Templeton – if you travel south out of Christchurch and turn right at Kirk Rd (Templeton) and then left down Maddisons you won’t be able to miss the picket line.
These workers do not receive any overtime rates despite frequently working extra shifts to cover staffing shortages. They also do not receive any evening rates and only a minimal weekend allowance.
These workers do not take strike action lightly due to the ‘care’ nature of their work. Life preserving services are being negotiated with the union however it will be a complete withdrawal of labour. The fact that these workers are going on strike shows the level of frustration. A strike ballot on Monday was 97% in support of strike action.
Please come along and support these workers.
