Fossil Fools Day, 1st April 2008.

Roll up, roll up! The climate circus is in town. Confronted with melting ice caps, unprecedented species extinction, droughts and extreme weather, climate change threatens our very survival. The fools at the head of the fossil fuel empire continue to plunder the earth, with the governments as willing court jesters at their side.
They would have us believe that we can escape climate change with techno-fixes, market mechanisms and offset schemes - all technocratic acrobatics that distract us from the truth: the only real solution to climate change is to keep fossil fuels in the ground.
Celebrate International Fossil Fools Day on 1st April, walking and cycling through the streets of Christchurch.
Express your disapproval of the War for Oil, fossil fuel dependency and celebrate the sustainable future for all. Bring your children, it's their future.
Setting off at 5.30 p.m from Cathedral Square
Car culture kills...don't be a fool!

THE POLITICS OF BONES by J. Timothy Hunt
Type: Common Interest - Beliefs & Causes
Description: Dedicated to spreading awareness of the oil industry's persecution of the Ogoni people in Nigeria, the story of Dr. Owens Wiwa and Ken Saro-Wiwa, and J. Timothy Hunt's new book THE POLITICS OF BONES.
"On November 10, 1995, Nigeria's military dictatorship executed nine environmental activists, including Ken Saro-Wiwa, the charismatic spokesman of the Ogoni people, whose land in the fertile Niger River delta has been polluted by oil extraction. During Ken's incarceration on a trumped-up murder charge, his brother, Dr. Owens Wiwa, fought valiantly to save his life-even though he himself was on the government's most-wanted list. When his quest failed, Owens narrowly escaped with his own life, fleeing the country on foot with his wife and newborn son."
-Synopsis from Hunt's book, THE POLITICS OF BONES
Please invite friends and anyone who would be supportive of this cause. People need to become aware of what went on and still continues in Nigeria, and read the book, it's amazing and 100% true.

I am simply suggesting that you if don't imply everyone who drives a car is a 'fool', and don't suggest unrealistic utopian purist solutions like 'leaving all the fossil fuels in the ground' you would get more support. But then I suspect you probably don't want to get support from working class people (who of necessity drive cars), but just want support from purist hippies, middle-class liberals and greens.
I like the emphasis in the post that its the fools at the head of the oil companies, supported by the govt, who are the real problem. And the link between oil and war. So i'm not unsupportive of 'the cause'. But i reckon its the system and not individuals who are to blame -- even if you got rid of the current head honchos new capitalists and politicians would replace them who would be just as bad.
Re: Christchurch Fossil Fools Day - 5days to go!!!
i am not blaming working class people, and also not supporting car culture. there is a difference. i support working class people that cycle and walk and carpool or use public transport.
i support work to lower public transport fairs and decrease dependency on oil and cars. it is foolish to get oil from a wilderness reserve in alaska or to go to war for oil in iraq, or support tyranny in nigeria for oil.
it is the fools in government and the industry fools that fund them that are the problem. people need to see beyond SUVs and md donalds as 'working class culture'.
