Future city councillors have a tough time dealing with the reality of climate change.
Student activists of Greens on Campus, assembled outside a council meeting on Thursday 28 March, to protest Auckland City Council’s decision to cancel several climate change prevention initiatives. The students are also concerned that the Council is cutting funding for sustainable transport projects, such as bus lanes and cycle ways.
Greens on Campus challenged the Mayor of Auckland, John Banks, to explain how the council would now address climate change. He explained to the group of over forty protesters that climate change was not his priority.
Elliot Blade, co-leader of the student group, stated, “We wanted to convey the message that by ignoring climate change and cutting funding for sustainable transport, Auckland City Council is seriously endangering the future of our city.” Using humour to get their point across, the students staged a mock debate on Queen Street between the councilors of 2008, dressed in suits, and the councilors of 2050, dressed in togs, snorkels, and flippers.
First item on the council agenda for 2050? Flooding in the Eastern Bays and Omaha, caused by sea-level rise and extreme tropical storms!
But underlying their antics, the group had a serious message. Ruby Haazen, co-leader of Greens on Campus said, “This decision has been forced through council by a few, misguided Citizens and Ratepayers councilors, despite opposition from the minority parties in council and the public.”
When asked to explain why the Citizens and Ratepayers on Council had decided to delete all goals related to preventing climate change from their Chief Executive’s objectives, the Mayor David Hay replied, “Central government funded by taxpayers and not local government and ratepayers can focus on climate if they so wish.”
However, the students say that attitude isn’t good enough. Ruby Haazen, co-leader of Greens on Campus said, “Climate change is a global crisis and we all, individuals, local, and central government, need to take action to prevent climate change. Most local councils in NZ are, for example, Christchurch City Council has reduced their own emissions by 30% over the last 10 years”.
Since the start of this year, the Auckland Council has also put several other sustainability initiatives on hold, such as their plan to appoint an Eco Advisor to make the Council more green. The Council has also decided to delete $28 million of funding for a transport program, called “Liveable Streets” that would have make Auckland’s streets safer and more pleasant for cyclist and walkers.
However, the students hope their action will convince the council to change their stance on climate change and sustainable transport. Elliot Blade said, “We hope this protest will convince the Citizens and Ratepayers Councillors that Aucklanders do care about climate change, and do want the council to take more, rather than less, action on this issue.

The sky is not falling!
We are entering a cooling period and CO2 has nothing to do with the global temperature.

You are helping them spread fear you tools!
Re: Students Label Auckland Council “Climate Criminals”
He can't change the climate. The mayor of AKL actually has important things to attend to like making sure our traffic flows and our schools have the funding they need. Give it a rest. Do your homework & shut the hell up tree huggers!
Re: Students Label Auckland Council “Climate Criminals”
It's easier to make a poster about climate change than to take on real issues.
You are spreading fear & disinformation.
Where is your proof that Auckland is going to sink?
Don't you think it's necessary to have some scientific proof before you make posters like that?
Or do you beleive Al Gore?

Great to see a campus based group encouraging climate action at a local level. All levels of our society need to be taking action, and need to be held accountable, on climate issues.

no one cares about your crank science website. hugging tree is better than having worse science than creationists. the earth really is flat to you. well mobil exxon can always do with some PR people.

Why should John Banks address climate change?

Climate denial is like walking around with an empty wallet going on about how rich you are.
it is a denial of reality and current science. exxon mobil have to fund something with their profits...
Re: Students Label Auckland Council “Climate Criminals”
The ecosphere is dynamic. So yes, it has and will continue to change. But it exists in a state of DYNAMIC EQUILIBRIUM. Just as with any well evoloved biological system, the equilibrium is buffered. However, there is always a point at which the excessive addition of a particular substance will upset or "tip" the balance of the dynamic equilibrium. A radical shift occurs in the system before a new, different equilibrium is restored. Think of the Earth as existing in this dynamic equilibrium:
Energy is stored in fossil fuel deposits at a geological rate which spans many millennia -> humans come along and reverse this trend over the period of the industrial revolution.
Is this anthropogenic rate of energy release going to upset the balane? Yes. And ask yourself whether or not you want to find out what the state of the new equilibrium for our planet Earth will look like.
Why get technical at climatescience.org.nz when the basic mass balance reveals the simple truth.
And why argue against the grain anyway? Less pollution and a less energy intensive way of life will be the outcome of climate change initiatives. What's wrong with that? The Earth's other resources like clean water, ecosystem health and arable soil will be depleted soon if we as hmans do not change our ways.

Keep the pressure on, local bodies still need some pain in National election year, don't just focus on MP's :-D
Re: Students Label Auckland Council “Climate Criminals”
1) Global warming is a hoax
Perhaps kiwis should research the facts
The biofuel market may be opening up here - this is more dangerous to us than global warming. Wake up people. Research!!! Don't rely on politicians for your information - Al Gore's scam movie has been shown to have 9 gross errors. He completely LIED TO US AND GOT A NOBLE PRIZE FOR HIS EFFORTS
Please wake up & do you own research.

Then you will know what a sham this AGW debate really is.
Re: Students Label Auckland Council “Climate Criminals”
The minister of climate change hasn't got a clue about the science of this issue. All parties are simply pointing to targets of CO2 emissions.
You guys need to wake up & realize the implications of this movement.
The implications of allowing ourselves to be sucked into the UN's agenda of reducing CO2 emissions is dangerous for the following reasons:
1) CO2 is a non-toxic plant food
2) Well-respected independant climate scientists throughout the world debate the IPCC claims
3) Reducing CO2 means reduced growth at a grass-roots level.
AGW promoters are not very smart. Believing everything you read about "peer-reviewed science" is not real research. Real research involves actually listening to both sides of the climate argument, and also looking at the impact of CO2 emission reduction strategies, both economically & politically.
I'm telling you guys, this is a fascist movement & you seem to support it. Fools. I thought ther ewould be more people against this propoganda but it looks like you guys are all being sucked in & beleiving Al Gore's claims that "the debate is over"
Dudes just keep researching with an open mind PLEASE.
Forget about the oil companies for 1 second & look at both sides of the story.
If you knew why this makes sense for politicians you too might become more skeptical (skepticism is actually a good attribute in science & politics).
Wake up people wake up soon. This is a scam

Auckland and the nation in general is too automobile-driven, it creates huge demand for oil and we import some 85% of the oil we use. You can think of it in any way but conclusion is only that stronger public transport is needed in the long term.
