Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

I've got into the habit of posting about stuff I care deeply about on this list and since the news broke I've been unable to get the plight of Elizabeth Fritzl out of my head. All day at work and all night the image of her hell hole keeps coming back all the time.
Ghastly it must have been for her children, but at least they knew no different world, Elizabeth did.

To be deprived of virtually everything that makes life a life for twenty four years and be tortured, physically, mentally and spiritually all that time.

To exist through all that and not become suicidal or driven crazy.

To miss being out in the cold and coming back into the warm, going to a party, giving a party, shopping, walking in the bush, having a job, making decisions, finding a lover, making friends. Missing the friends she'd already made.

Having no contact but with her mad authoritarian rapist captor. Noone to cuddle up to or have a laugh with.

Bearing and looking after her children, alone, in concentration camp conditions.

Trying to escape after ten years, failing and carrying on. After twenty four years, being ready and able to to dare stick a help note in her daughter's pocket when she finally was sent to hospital.

Elizabeth Fritzl's survival of such an ordeal is an extraordinary individual heroism and a triumph of the human spirit. An inspiration to keep on going when every single thing in your universe seems hopeless. Her example should be taken as a priceless gift to revolutionary humanity.

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

Good stuff, Don I too agree that this was an act of individual heroism

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

Do we know for sure that she has survived the ordeal mentally?
Concentration camp internees still had plenty of social contact.

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

I'm sure that, as was the case with the other austrian girl, the health authorities concerned are doing the best that they can.

I'd be concerned about Mrs Fritzl, too - Elizabeth's mother - who can't have had an exactly loving, stable experience of marriage and motherhood.

Makes Austrian men look like a big risk factor, though, doesn't it?
For once, I'll reference something the Dompost published - Rosemary McLeod suggested putting a fibre-optic investigatory cable through the floorboards of every residence of an Austrian male in the country. Perhaps they'd even find Madeleine McCann...

This story, of Elizabeth Fritzl's terrible life of abuse, just epitomises for me why the patriarchal systems, that support the on-going ability of men who *choose* this kind of behaviour to get away with it for decades, need to be destroyed. Soon.

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

Thanks for this Don.

I've been struggling to read about this, because it's the field I work and volunteer in - violence against women - and has been for more than a decade. And everytime a case like this becomes public, the way mainstream media, and to a certain extent 'us', deals with it, disturbs me. Herr Fritzl is a man who made monstrous choices, who deliberately covered up his abuse of his children for 24 years. But he made those choices in our world, because violence against women is minimised, denied, tolerated and supported by all kinds of social mores, customs, traditions, behaviour.

Sometimes when we create a 'monster' we miss the point - sexual abuse and torture is an experience too many women and girls have (and too many men and boys too).

I like your turning this on it's head by celebrating Elizabeth Fritzl's survival, and I hope to hell she, and her children do survive with some sense of themselves, some way to find joy and connection and happiness intact.

Thanks again.

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

I am not sure if many out there believe there is a Dark side which is the Devil and a Light side which is God. Bit Believe the only way she cold have survived such an ordeal is if she had God in her heart all the time. She kept believing and God came to her rescue even during the darkest hours. Once again the Devil lost. In one of the articles when the came out of the Dungeon., Elizabeth's 5 year old son looked up at the moon and asked the driver, "is that where God is." Elizabeth and her Kids will be fine.

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

I think this is the only (and a wonderful) comment I read about this terrible story, with which I fully agree and I feel akin to the one who wrote this. I do hope that no psychiatric 'help' will change Elizabeth's strength in helplessness.

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

I agree with you all. Did you know that Elizabeth Fritzl was a vegan? She made a choice not to hurt other beings just for her own feeding pleasure. She is a real hero.

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

Hi Don,
I agree with everything you said. I too have been preoccupied with this case since it broke. I think Elizabeth is a remarkable woman. No matter what we go through in our lives, if we start to feel sorry for ourselves all we have to do is go back to her life, then realize we have nothing to feel sorry for ourselves about.

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

Thank you for reminding me that Elizabeth Fritzl is a hero. I have been so haunted by this story. When it first broke I cried my heart out for her and her children. To imagine what her and her childrens lives were like for all those years is almost incomprehensible. To think about what she has gone through and the pain of her watching her children go through the same thing would be worse to any parent under those circumstances. I pray that they each enjoy every minute of the remainder of their life and experience all that they have missed and could never imagine.

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

Elizabeth Frtizl.., you are one of the most inspirational lady of this 21st century! I've never stop thinking about the harrowing experiences you've been through in the last 24 years of you captive.., yet you've continued to be strong and the whole world loves you dearly!!! I'll always pray for you and your kids to have the most remarkable recovery and above all to live the happy and normal life the you've all deserved all these years! God bless you all!!!

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

Beautiful Don. I can't get her out of my mind too. I hope they could do the same to this non-father I would say. Isn't that fair to make him suffer the same amount?

And this Elizabeth is a hero to survive this war. I pray the GOD to give her the best things in heaven that he can give to anyone, and give that father the worst things in the hell. This is the only thing that can calm me down. I suffer really, when I think about this woman.

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

elizabeth fritzl truly is a wrold wide hero. She survived more than most could even imagine she is truly amazing. She took care of her children when most of us would have layed down and died. I am truly amazed by her strength and determination. Nobel Peace PriZe winner for sure in my book. Look what she was given to deal with and not only did she survive but she fought for her kids to survive. She continues to amaze me.

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

I'm having a hard time imagining any of this, but what strikes me at this moment is how difficult it would be, after having spent years ALONE, to receive and nurture a baby -- in the face of continued deprivation and abuse.

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

I agree with you, elizabeth is a testamony to the human spirit to survive and live!

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

I, too, keep thinking about this marvelous woman. It is amazing what this poor woman went through and was still able to take care of her children. It was probably the fact that she did have a child / children to care for that saved her sanity. She wasn't totally alone and she had someone to fight for and protect as best she could. It must have hurt her very much to have the unspeakable father take three of her children away from her, she must have worried about them all the time, I am sure she missed and loved them. Elizabeth is truly someone to admire and I hope the best for her in the coming years.

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

great aritcle!

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

I also cannot get the family out of my mind and think about them every single day. Since we do take things for granted, it must have been so horrible to be in her shoes. I cannot imagine. I would go crazy I believe. I just want to give them all a big hug and tell them how important to the world they are. They are everything that resembles strength, hope, and love. And the greatest of these is Love. Amy Indianapolis, IN

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

I agree with these sentiments. I have been making similar comments on other sites. Amstetten and the entire nation of Austria should be immensely proud of this incredible young woman.
Might I add that you can financially assist Elisabeth and her family either through as direct bank deposit, see www.amstetten.at) or deposit through PayPal using the email address office (at) notar-zillinger.at This will help in a positive way

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

God Bless Elizabeth and her Children.

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

Yes, I agree with all of you. This is a story I could not get out of my mind and I look for updates - not for morbid curiosity - but for a glimpse into the new happiness this family is finding in the world they had been denied. That was the first thing I said about Elizabeth - she IS a HERO - no question of it. She survived and because of her, her children did as well. As for Josef, there is no punishment bad enough to fit his crimes.

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

I have been following this case online, and so far this is the only site I have found where most of the comments are sensitive and intelligent - many others seem to deteriorate into racism and stupidity.
Elisabeth is a TRUE HERO, an unbelievably strong and brave woman. She could have at any time killed her father, then her chldren, and then herself, but she didn't!
As for him (Josef), I guess his defense will be insanity, but I do not believe that he is insane. He just has a typical criminal mentality - me,me,me..all about me. He knows right from wrong, he knows what he did was wrong...he just doesn't care!
And now I read that he will go up before a woman judge. For a man whose whole life has been about having control over women and children, that will be hard...good!!
My last comment...I am very sick of articles that use words about his "great sexual potency"..as if this disgusting PIG was some kind of great stud!

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

She is a Hero and what you said here brought tears once again to my eyes about this story. Strength in the face of unimaginable fear and terror. They didn't know when or if Fritzl would one day kill them down there like when he said he would gas (automatically if they touched the door) them if they tried to escape. What I would like is a link to donate that is not in German since I'm not German and don't know what it says. Also, a viable authentic link. Not from someone who signs anonymous, sorry, no hurt feelings intended. We would all do well to donate to this worthwhile cause since this woman will need quite a bit of money for the recovery of her children and herself. And to start a new life since the incomes from the houses Josef had may not be coming in. I'm sure he was so controling that all the money in that household was under his thumb. Please, anyone with knowledge of where to donate, that would be a great help. Perhaps thru a media station? I don't know. Oh, I see. It automatically signs your name Anonymous. How odd.

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

elizabeth is one of the strongest,of many women
held captive that i'v heard of, and should be given a medal for courage.

her dad, i can think of no other punishment than
and underground prizon in solitary confinment..

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

This poor woman. I wish her well, even though she probably can't have a child with a man she loves. I just want her to know that God will help her to find a nice man who hopefully can give her a decent life and love her for the woman she can be and is. Good luck honey, and you have a friend here. You can contact me anytime by email. Our love and prayers are with you and your children, your siblings, and your mom. As far as your dad goes, he can rot in hell. My dad raped my sister and I know from where I speak. Anyway, We love you.

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

Although we never know when and where this is taking place. I tend to feel guilty this girl was unable to live a normal life as the rest of us. The monster had no concern for her happiness only his evil twisted happiness. Im shocked at how his wife wouldnt think something was odd when three babies show up on the doorstep and they adopt the kids and she doesnt suspect a thing. unless they were divorced, this woman had to notice things that should be questioned. and rooms being added and she never entered to see what was being built and not ask what it was going to be used for. if it were me, I would be snooping and finding a way to see what he was doing. I cant believe anyone is that totally stupid. sure he may have controlled her and she afraid of him.. But Hey. if there was a possiblity that odd things were going on and my daughter was missing. nothing would stop me from seeing whats going on. within 24 years I would think a mother would be trying to go on a talk show to get help finding her daughter..and maybe the daughter would noticed her on tv. If I were elizabeth I think it would be really hard to believe the mother didnt have some knowledge of what was going on. wow, 24 years without friends or other family. this evil devil should have to spend his last years left living in the same hell hole he put her in. and if he got sick just let him be sick..sending him to prison with food and light is to good for him...

Re: Trbute to Elizabeth Fritzl

Elizabeth Fritzl is a true testament to the human spirit! Her story takes my breath away every time I think of it. I cant imagine the hell she has endured, and I cant put into words the love and joy I pray she and her children find for the remainder of they're lives...and beyond!
