Police To Use Bushmaster Rifles Over Glocks
Press Release: Global Peace And Justice Auckland
Police escalate arms carried without public discussion or independent oversight
Yet a further escalation in police arming themselves was announced on Friday afternoon with no public discussion and no independent oversight.
The police media release was timed for 2.34pm – a dead-news time designed to avoid public scrutiny.
The police have decided to use the Bushmaster semi-automatic rifle as their preferred option in dealing with armed situations. Previously this weapon was deployed only by the Armed Offenders Squad. Now it is to be used by frontline police in any situations where arms may be involved. (It will replace the Glock pistol which till now has had this preferred roll)
GPJA is concerned this ongoing escalation in arming of police is seen by the police and the government as “operational decisions” for the police themselves to make.
We reject this absolutely. These must be community decisions because all of us will have to live with the consequences.
With more powerful weapons more readily available the huge danger is that weapons such as this semi-automatic rifle will come to be used as the first response (as in the US) rather than as a last response. We have seen this with the police use of pepper-spray where the original guidelines have gone out the window and it is used “willy-nilly” by front line police.
Safeguarding the police and the community is best served by careful, independent oversight of decisions about the arms police carry.
The police in New Zealand must not be a law unto themselves as they are in many other countries with disastrous results for the police as well as the community.

Militarisation of the police force - that should ring a few alarm bells.

The last we checked they were set to purchase another 300 of these as well.
The police were also either looking at and have probably already purchased a stack of these.

I guess these will be announced in a year or two, much like the Bushmaster is now, as something they are considering looking at…
In terms of ballistics, none of these rifles should ever be used by police for domestic situations.
These are high powered rifles whose bullets travel in excess of 3000 feet per second, and will pass through their victim and can traverse several walls of buildings (even hollow points) before stopping.
The chances of collateral killings is much higher than with the pistol bullet which tends to stop in the victim.

doh.
Re: Police To Use Bushmaster Rifles Over Glocks
These are a latter model to the classic viet nam era American rifle.
I'm in two minds in the use of rifles over pistols.
The Glock is a hand cannon and wildly inaccurate due to having joints at wrist, elbow, shoulder all able to throw off the aim.
A rifle is far more accurate as it is (should be) fired from the shoulder. A possible issue with small women firing a rifle over a pistol, but minor in comparison with pistol accuracy (15m).
That they launch this 30yrs on from Bastion Point and without any oversight is an incredible level of autonomy.
I'm infavour of more police dogs. To my knowledge no-one has died from a police dog bite, scarred and harmed, sure, intimidation and aggressive, sure, but non leathal.

Remeber Sandra Manderson (Our Cop in the USA) has been kicked of firing ranges for being dangerous - not just missing - but being DANGEROUS.
