Look forward to seeing you there! :)

About Adrian Leason
I am a small-time organic gardener on a two hectare farm and a part-time Primary School teacher. I am married and a father of six young children. I am a parishioner at St. Mary's Pukekaraka, Otaki and an active participant with the dis-organiastion known as 'The Catholic Worker'. In the past few years I have worked as a Senior Advisor with Child, Youth & Family in Wellington after my family and I spent three years in Asia, living in a slum helping with community development.

Re: 'If I had a sickle..' - Ploughshares talk and film screening

$5.00 unwaged? Jeppers. Lots of money for someone on a benefit. Making it very hard for low income people to see this stuff : (

I think you should consider lowing those costs. Even working class paid workers dont get much.

Are you trying to make money or help others to learn?

Re: 'If I had a sickle..' - Ploughshares talk and film screening

Well, its a fundraiser, so I'm guessing they are trying to make some cash to cover legal expenses

Re: 'If I had a sickle..' - Ploughshares talk and film screening

Fundraising by taking money off low income and beneficaries?? Still dont agree with it. Kaupapa is good. Charge isnt. Why not ask for a koha?

Re: 'If I had a sickle..' - Ploughshares talk and film screening

"Taking money"? If you don't want to give money, don't go.

Re: 'If I had a sickle..' - Ploughshares talk and film screening

We did consider a koha,

However we need to a) cover our costs - this is not the cheapest venue by far, and b) we would like to contribute funds toward the Ploughshares group (to do with it whatever they feel is best), and unfortunately our experience with some koha events (with the costs that this event is to us) is that we would barely cover the venue hire.

I'm sorry if $5 is really unaffordable, but we cannot afford to put this on out of our own pockets, and the whole idea is of a fundraiser also. We're not trying to make a quick buck or fleece anybody. A good portion of us are beneficiaries and this was the price we thought would be affordable and fair to most.

Re: 'If I had a sickle..' - Ploughshares talk and film screening

Thanks for your reply. It is great to hear the thought you put into the costs. Yes it is hard I agree but with the massive increases in food and fuel costs it is very hard for low income to find the money to do these things. Maybe there is another way of having it where low income could come at a lower cost another time. Or is there a DVD that could be lent out perhaps? Maybe other groups around the country would like to watch, show this story. It is of great interest to many groups and people.

Re: 'If I had a sickle..' - Ploughshares talk and film screening

awesome - i've always wanted to see that - you should come up to Auckland and screen it

Re: 'If I had a sickle..' - Ploughshares talk and film screening

I will enquire as to the availability of the film outside of where we are borrowing it from.

Also, if you really can not afford the full admission, I can't speak for everyone, but my own view is that we wouldn't be turning you away.

Is there a link to plowshares postal address and i'll pass thehat around europe or spread it so folks can contribute? As the Wobblies would say "They're on trial for us, we're on the loose for them!"

$5 = 10 ciggies or one small beer

Re: 'If I had a sickle..' - Ploughshares talk and film screening

If yout to hold this in Auckland I would be happy to sponsor 1 unwaged person and challenge other waged workers to do the same.

Kia ora

I went along to hear Adrian speak, but because they played the film first, I didn't get to hear him because I had to leave for a cafe shift at 8pm. I don't mind, since I'm happy to contribute to the fundraising, but it looked like the talk was being filmed, and I would be keen to know if it is posted online.

Re: 'If I had a sickle..' - Ploughshares talk and film screening

Have you considered asking to hold your events at 128 Able Smith Street, which is a social centre? Surely that would be the cheapest option? I do believe they have quite a few facilities there.

Re: 'If I had a sickle..' - Ploughshares talk and film screening

Abel Smith Street would only hold about 25 comfortably for a film show.

Re: 'If I had a sickle..' - Ploughshares talk and film screening

there's a decent write up of the ploughshares adventures in the july metro magazine which is a really decent look into the heart and thoughts of Peter Murnane and in which murnane declares "In a sense I'm an anarchist"
