Police to be armed with tasers (from Stuff.co.nz)

Police Commissioner Howard Broad has recommended his officers be armed with taser stun guns.

However, he has sought input from MPs before making a final decision.

Police Minister Annette King said Mr Broad had recommended police be able to use tasers.

Only selected trained front-line staff could use them. They would not be carried by patrolling staff.

Assaults on police had increased from 57 in 1998-99 to 88 2006-07.

Ms King said 930 police agencies worldwide used tasers.

She said they were faster and more effective dealing with aggressive individuals than pepper spray.

In a statement Green MP Keith Locke said arming police with tasers was a sad step.

"The Greens are very opposed to these painful and sometimes lethal stun guns being introduced into the police armoury."

After a year-long trial in Auckland and Wellington ended last year, police said Tasers were desperately needed because they could stop offenders without killing them.

But opponents of the weapon said they were dangerous and had killed people in the United States. The New Zealand guns deliver a lower voltage than those used in the US.

Police Association President Greg O'Connor said last month that the big gap in police tactical options is tasers, not firearms.

His comments followed in response to a survey showing 53 percent of the New Zealand public would like the police to be armed.

"Police are able to draw firearms when they are needed.

"The big gap in our tactical options is a less-than-lethal option that will reliably incapacitate a dangerous offender.

"Issuing Tasers to every primary response police officer would make a real difference to the safety of police, the public and even offenders themselves," Mr O'Connor said.

He said the survey result was not surprising.

"It is a reflection of the increasingly serious violence that is being witnessed daily by police and public alike.

"However, our own survey of Police Association members in 2005 did not indicate a desire amongst most police to be regularly armed with firearms."

He said besides the personal burden of having to shoot someone, an enormous amount of scrutiny and trial-by-media follows whenever a police officer is required to use lethal force.

"Police today are almost more afraid of having to use lethal force, than they are of being subjected to it.

"That risks making our police tentative in responding to dangerous and volatile situations, and a tentative police force is no use to anyone," Mr O'Connor said.

"Ms King said 930 police agencies worldwide used tasers."

About the same number of police agencies also have death squads on the payroll so will that be Kings new recommendation too.

Re: Police to be armed with tasers (from Stuff.co.nz)

Yeah two can play that silly propagandarist game.

I present the ARSER

Why the police shouldn't be allowed tasers

Because of incidents like this:

The Crown alleges Parsons, who has a 25-year police service record, pepper-sprayed Mr Falwasser in the face two or three times after the latter refused to be fingerprinted or photographed.

Busby then allegedly struck Mr Falwasser from behind on the hand and wrist with separate blows as he put his hands up to protect his face.

As Mr Falwasser made movements towards the door, Busby allegedly struck him on the head, causing bleeding.

Mr Pilditch said that over the next 10 minutes Mr Falwasser remained in the cell, which was shrouded in pepper spray, making it "intolerable for police officers".

Later, Laing and Mills continued to pepper-spray Mr Falwasser's cell as he remained there, squirting the spray through vents over a 10- to 15-minute period.

And that's just with batons and pepper spray; just imagine what this pack of sadists would have done if armed with electric torture devices.

The officers involved are currently being prosecuted for assault. That's putting it mildly. Pepper spray causes unbearable pain to the eyes. Locking someone in a confined space and then filling it with pepper spray for 10-15 minutes at minimum constitutes cruel and degrading treatment, and may meet the threshold for torture (severe physical or mental pain and suffering inflicted to obtain information or as punishment or coercion) under New Zealand and international law. Yes, worse things happen in shitty third world dictatorships, but that's no excuse to refuse to call the crime by its name or turn a blind eye to it in New Zealand

Um, if this is an article from Stuff, then it belongs in OtherPress, not the Local Newswire. The Local Newswire is for non-corporate, original writing only.

awww but its worth it or the ARSER alone hahahaha

Re: Police to be armed with tasers (from Stuff.co.nz)

Why have the police spent so much public time focussing on whether or not they should be able to arm themselves with tasers when they have gone ahead and armed themselves with M16s and .338 Lapua long range sniper rifles without any public consultation at all.

Re: Police to be armed with tasers (from Stuff.co.nz)

Tasering is just one of many
torture techniques perfected
on non whites by the
"DemoNcracy" loving western civilizations--
--since these torture techniques are so harmless--
why are they not permittedd against "law" enforcement personnel and
"government" officials??
Why is it more of a crime to tazer the police than to throw water filled
baloons at them??

The Police cannot be trusted with their own cock's let alone a taser.

Re: Police to be armed with tasers (from Stuff.co.nz)

I work in Left Bank, Wellington and we often have police arresting people in this area for 'public drunkenness' etc. A man was pepper-sprayed, thrown to the ground and handcuffed last week right infront of several shop-minders and other public (who did not assist the police in anyway).

How long until we see tasers used in our streets and more importantly what will we do about it?

Does anyone know what we can do to assist taser victims and stop police using them or inflicting more pain afterwards? Other than a riot... ;)

Can you give refuge on private property to someone police want to arrest?

Re: Police to be armed with tasers (from Stuff.co.nz)

The best weapon against abuse is sunlight or a camera.

It is entirely unprincipled that Broad & King don't take a zap themselves.

Re: Police to be armed with tasers (from Stuff.co.nz)

Tasers are simply the next step along Labour's road to creeping-fascism. Expect Minister of the Filth Annette King to introduce a bill allowing the state terrorists to hold suspects for 42 days without charge or access to a lawyer, like Brown's Labour government is doing in Britain.

Counter-taserism

Maybe some of those richies amongst us could buy 100 rolls of this stuff, make up some overauls and hand them out for free to those people most commonly tased

Re: Police to be armed with tasers (from Stuff.co.nz)

Taser generates the effects of fear. It is psychological effect that works better in the organisation of the consumer class, obey or else.

It works on the same principle as Terrorism. The propaganda of 9/11 gave rise to terrorism, and the effects associates images and noise, when seen and heard the consumers immediately submit their freedom and obey.

It is the actual relations of the NWO.

There are new documentaries on the NWO including 'Fear Doctrine by Naomi Klen'.

Both Labour and National are advocates of the NWO.

Tasers are just the latest
torture devised by west
"civilization"
for those they define
as the wogs and towelheads--
but now after 200 years everyone
gets to be tortured--
